 Ken’s Ride - My Version!
Ken was out of leaders for his ride and it fell to me. I hate leading the ride, as something out of whack always happens when I lead the ride. But Ken, Steve, Steve, Mark, and Don were all unavailable, so it fell to me. I drove to the park and waited to see if anyone was going to show or not. I waited at the tennis courts until after 2, then went to the zoo parking lot to see if there was anyone waiting for the ride. There I found Kriss, Nina, and Marilyn. Kriss was the spokeslady for them. Nina is her 80-year-old mother, and Marilyn only speaks limited English. We started out and Marilyn was really struggling to keep the bike upright. She had never ridden a bike before the previous day. We rode just a little way and Marilyn decided that she shouldn’t ride and went back to the car.

Kriss, Nina, and I started again. We kept a pretty slow pace, but started making our way up the trail. My bike computer quit working after a quarter mile, so I was a little lost as to speed. I stopped at Linky Stone Park, the Cafe, Swamp Rabbit Station, and Furman to check to see how Kriss and Nina were doing. Kriss was struggling with the pace, while Nina kept up well. We got off the trail at Furman and rode around the lake. Wile there I found a beat up disc (a disc golf disc) in the street. It looked like it had been hit with a lawn mower but I picked it up and put it in my pannier. We got back on the trail and I saw Chris G then heard Becky G call my name from a group of women. We rode on to the turn-around across from Sunrift Outfitters then we stopped at the Treehouse. There we met Don Y and Lynda. They intended to meet the group at Pedal Chic, but when we didn’t show in a timely manner they rode up the trail alone. We talked to them outside the Treehouse for a good while, then they headed back down the trail. Once inside I bought a cup of decaf for me and an apple cinamon muffin to take home to Cis. I snacked on mixed nuts and dried fruits and we chatted for a while. While there I went outside and got my bike computer working again.

Kriss is only here for another week, while Nina will be staying in the area for a few months. We started back down the trail and Kriss stopped to bundle up a little better. So I also got my jacket out of the pannier and put it on. It sure felt better with it! We did fairly well going back down the trail. I passed Swamp Rabbit stories on to Kriss and also told her that Nina might be interested in riding with the Swamp ROMP. We stopped at a couple of sight-seeing spots. Kriss got a picture of the root tree as we headed back to the park. Once we were in the park we saw Marilyn out walking. We rode back to the cars and Marilyn showed up a couple of minutes later. I gave Kriss my number so that we can see about getting Nina out for future rides.
