 January Thaw
Frigid weather left the area for a couple days, and the temperature soared into the fifties. Wind was a bit testy blowing in the teens with an occasional gust into the twenties. Anyhow, got the road bike out of the basement and headed up Fitzpatrick Hill. Climbing wasn't horrendous as have been getting a good workout on the Computrainer a couple of days a week, so it hasn't been like I've been off the bike for awhile. Had a pretty good spin and only came out of the saddle for the twelve percent section after the bridge. Climbing was lacking as usual but recovered quickly and had my first dog sprint in the rollers at the top of the climb. Felt pretty good and did a thatch weave to keep the young pit bull off his game and was able to reach the top without getting bit and was able to sprint away when the slope lessened. Plan was to climb into the wind and it worked pretty well on the lower middle road as it is runs just below the ridge line and blocked the wind somewhat. Times actually looked pretty decent until I hit the Middle Road proper and hit a wind wall. Spent the next six miles spinning into the wind. Couldn't hear much other than the wind roaring in my ears. Got to Horseheads and headed back home with ten miles of tailwind. Rode mostly in the mid twenties with occasional tic over the thirty mile an hour mark. I was able to break the speed limit into Millport for the first time this year. Got passed by a few tractor trailers that were sucking along road salt clouds. It was a fun ride although I was hoping to average seventeen but lost too much time in the six miles of headwind. Was planning on riding another short loop after reaching Montour but abandoned when I had a puncture. The puncture sealed up nicely but didn't want to push my luck and headed for the house.
