Comments: Thermometer day. Commutes, then a ride to Mt. Angel Abbey (Stations of the Cross on a trike was kinda cool!) by way of Hazelgreen and back the same route to meet Kim and Kathleen downtown for dinner. Rode home at walking pace with Kim. Average speed is that recorded when I got downtown. Ride felt good, except that I think I have just about had enough out of my sticky brake cables....
Wildlife spotted: great blue heron
Nonwildlife spotted: OMGP0N1ES! and camels (really!) |
| Weather Conditions: SSE wind 10-15, intermittent drizzle. Yech. |

Comments: To the salle for fencing and a meeting, then out to Cordon Road, north to Silverton Road, and south on Lardon to State Street and home. Nice ride. Didn't feel like I was pushing, but still had a nice average speed -- despite a bit of soreness from yesterday. Had never ridden on Lardon Road before, and was surprised to end up in Pratum (I thought it paralleled Cordon Rd. more). Had a nice "advertisement for God" on the return leg with the sunset behind the clouds.
Wardrobe used: DeFeet Woolie Boolie socks, Lake MX60 shoes, Gore leg warmers, Specialized arm warmers, Craft T-shirt, Giant 3-season gloves, Headsweats long-bill hat, bike shorts. 121.88 miles for the week. |
| Weather Conditions: Partly sunny and dry (Definitely a yea! after yesterday's ride). Wind surprised me and shifted to the north at 10-13 mph. |

Comments: Thermometer day. My third metric! Also a new personal best for a 2-day period (89.05 miles), 3-day period (133.34), and 7-day period (143.33). Yea! Went north to Dayton (stopped for chocolate milk) via Spring Valley and Webfoot Road (nice farm country), then northwest to Newberg (yech -- worst excuse for "bike lane" yet), then south back to Salem via St. Paul and Keizer. First half was beautiful weather and felt great. Averaged 15.5 mph through mixture of small hills, rollers, and flats (to Newberg). Second half my calves were complaining. I told them they were 25+ miles from home, so deal with it. We came to an understanding that involved a couple of quick snack stops and a Hershey bar with almonds. And to my surprise, my overall average speed actually increased during the second half (mostly flat). Turned on lights for the last 10 miles. Wardrobe used: SmartWool socks, Lake MX60 shoes, Gore leg warmers, Specialized arm warmers, Craft T-shirt, Giant 3-season gloves, Headsweats long-bill hat, bike shorts. Two wardrobe changes (one to take arm warmers off early in the ride and one to put them back on for the last hour or so). Wildlife: red-taileed hawks, some kind of falcon, robins, crows, killdeer, scrub jays. Heard but not seen: frogs (once so loud I couldn't hear anything else), red wing blackbirds. |
| Weather Conditions: Dry! Partly sunny for first half; overcaast for second half (so no sunset thiss time). Northerly winds 3-5 mph. Skies cleared as it darkened. Got home just before the almost-full moon rose (that would have been pretty). |

Comments: Today makes a new personal best for 7-day miles -- 159.08
Out State Street to Cordon Road, north to Center, east to Fruitland on Center, south on 63rd/62nd to Macleay Road, east through Macleay to Howell Prairie Road, north to State Street, and then west to home. Nice ride. Felt a little tired for the first half, then perked up. Passed the six o'clock peleton outbound on State Street on the way home. No wildlife spotted, but heard lots of frogs again. Skeeters investigated me when I stopped to check the map (that doesn't bode well).
Turned on be-seen lights for the last 5 miles or so.
Wardrobe used: white cotton socks, Lake MX60 shoes, cotton T-shirt, Specialized fingerless gloves, Headsweats long-bill hat, Adidas bike shorts.

Metric #4!
New personal bests for daily, weekly, and 7-day miles (175.86)
Out Wallace Road to Lfayette Hwy, Lafayette Hwy to Lafayette, north on Abbey Road to Hwy 240, then back home. Took Fairview Road cutoff to Wallace Road in the way home to avoid the dairy stench. Ride felt good, except a faint twinge in left achilles. Trikey developed an annoying intermittent squeal in the right front wheel on the way back just south of Lincoln. Probably a wheel bearing. Need to invest in some rainpants designed for cycling -- I lose a couple of mph when wearing the ones I have, plus they are too heavy. First ride with new used Garmin Edge 305. Altimeter isn't working, but otherwise worked well. Much tinkering to do with it still.
Now using calories data from Edge 305. Wildlife spotted: redtail hawk, falcon, killdeer, crows, ducks, Canada geese, redwing blackbirds. Heard a few frogs. No skeeters. Wardrobe used: DeFeet Woolie Boolie socks, Lake MX60 shoes, Craft T-shirt, Specialized fingerless gloves, Headsweats long-bill hat, Adidas bike shorts, Gore leg warmers, Gore bike jacket, rain pants. |
| Weather Conditions: Overcast, intermittent light drizzle, a few miles with light rain. |

Comments: State Street to Cordon, north to Lardon, east to Howell Prairie, south to State Street and then home. Wonderful tailwind on Cordon Road -- cruised at 20-25 for the length. And that meant a headwind on Howell Prairie. Sigh.
Did major cleanup on Trikey today, including tearing apart and cleaning the rear derailleur. Couldn't find any sign of trouble with right front wheel (other than filth from yesterday's ride). Powertrain felt better afterwards. Tires are wearing very well (rear has slightly more wear than the front two).
Wildlife spotted: doves, killdeer, Canada geese, robins, redwing blackbirds. No skeeters. Wardrobe used: DeFeet Woolie Boolie socks, Lake MX60 shoes, cotton T-shirt, Specialized fingerless gloves, Headsweats long-bill hat, Adidas bike shorts. |
| Weather Conditions: Partly cloudy, dry. Southerly winds 10-16, gusting in the low 20s. |

Comments: Lots of traffic on 22 today. Only stopped twice on the climb! Trikey behaved well on the descent. Goggles would have been nice to reduce the tearing at speeds above 35. Felt much more comfortable with the 20 and 25 mph curves on the descent due to improved leaning technique. Heartrate monitor worked well and was comfortable. I learned that the limiting factor on climbs appears to be my legs, not my CV system. Called Garmin and got RMA for altimeter problem (was a factory defect that the original owner could have fixed for free--grrr). Wildlife spotted: killdeer, crows, possibly a gopher (they are very fast!). No skeeters. Wardrobe used: DeFeet Woolie Boolie socks, Lake MX60 shoes, cotton T-shirt, Specialized fingerless gloves, Headsweats long-bill cap, Adidas bike shorts. Removed cap for descent. |

Comments: New max speed record! Also new personal best for number of feet climbing. Went out Battle Creek/Parrish Gap (with a detour on Summit Loop) to just north of Jefferson, then west to Ankeny Road, past the wildlife refuge to Liberty/Buena Vista Road, and then north on Liberty to Browning, east to 12th Street and then home. Hills. Lots of hills. This was an absolutely beautiful ride. The temperature was mild, there was no wind to speak of, and plenty of glorious sunshine illuminating one pastoral picture postcard after another. Rolling hills, green fields, distant mountains -- I don't know how many times I commented out loud about the scenic beauty (yes, I was riding by myself). My legs weren't really with the program for the first half hour. I just wasn't in the groove. Then something clicked and the ride became fun -- even climbing the hills! I passed a DF rider on Battle Creek just south of I-5, who then proceeded to silently draft off of me for the next couple of miles until I had to stop to read the map (he kept going). Was kinda satisfying to be able to say, "On yer left!" Stopped for a break at the Cloverdale cemetery (there's a privy there, for future reference) and looked at the headstones. There is a veteran (Civil War) of the 116th (or 115th -- didn't write it down) Illinois Volunteers buried there. Critters spotted: not much wildlife -- a turkey vulture, some wild turkeys (non-native), and a great blue heron; but spring is here: lambs, a foal, and goat kids, plus the usual llamas, cows, and horses. And some rheas (distant relatives to the ostrich). And, I was briefly "chased" by three corgis (THAT was funny!). Wardrobe used: DeFeet Woolie Boolie socks, Lake MX60 shoes, cotton T-shirt, (new) Specialized fingerless gloves, Headsweats long-bill cap, Adidas bike shorts. Food and water: 1 box of raisins, two granola bars, 1.5 liters of water. No ride yesterday, as I spent most of the day doing bike maintenance: reworked brake cables (and lubed them), turned right front tire around so tread was correctly oriented, installed 30T Q-ring, replaced 62T big ring with factory 52T (combination of 62T and 30T Q-Ring was too much for the front derailleur), reworked front derailleur cable (and lubed), turned right-hand grip shifter around 180˚ (experiment), inspected left headset (looks great), converted Sigma spot headlight to a helmet light (batter on helmet, too), and installed DiNotte taillight (WOW!) with custom extra-long cord (Thanks, DiNotte! This allows the battery to live out of the way behind my headrest). Verdict on changes: so far, so good. The Q-Ring took some getting used to, but I really liked it on the hills -- smooth, smooth, smooth. Brake levers finally felt "right" for the first time.

Comments: Ran a couple of errands downtown, and then rode out Sunnyview to Victor Point School and back on State Street Beautiful evening with a nice tailwind most of the way out that miraculously went away (mostly) for the trip back! On outward leg, farmsteads and fields were sunlit against dark grey clouds in the east. A nice ride for scenery marred only by minor mechanical issues. Wildlife spotted: redtail hawks, crows, killdeer, swallows, starlings, deer, and redwing blackbirds (heard but not seen). Wardrobe used: DeFeet Woolie Boolie socks, Lake MX60 shoes, cotton T-shirt, Specialized fingerless gloves, Headsweats long-bill cap, Adidas bike shorts, Gore leg warmers, Specialized arm warmers. Had to put on Gore jacket for return leg when the temperature dropped. Food and water: two granola bars, 0.5 liters of water. Equipment notes: Used FastBack and 2-liter hydration bladder for first time today. I like. Bike notes: I seem to have done something to the front-end alignment -- shimmying problems and sluggish speeds. Stopped a number of times to fuss with derailleur adjustments -- hesitation on the rear, slipping off the big ring in front. Argh.

Comments: Metric #5! Total time: about 6:05
Thermometer day.
New personal bests for monthly mileage, calories burned, max speed, max altitude, and altitude gain! Salem to Hillsboro by way of Bald Peak (staying at John and Lisa's). A beautiful day for a ride. Took backroads for the most part. Mostly flat except for some rollers and Bald Peak. The first half of the Bald Peak climb was 4-5% grade. Then it got steeper, ranging from 8% to as much as 15% in places, with a 150-foot elevation loss about a mile from the summit. Made the climb with no stops until the top. Whew! The sled ride down the other side was awesome, with much whooping and hollering for almost 3 miles. Ran out of water at the top of Bald Peak (no water in the park there). Didn't find any more water until I got to Hillsboro's Rood Bridge Park, so I got to experience the joys of cramping a few times. Ow. Took three liters; needed 3.5. Oops. Gorgeous views on the climb, at the summit, and on the descent. Couldn't see any of the Cascade peaks, but that didn't matter. Wildlife spotted: redtail hawk, killdeer, falcon, golden eagle, some kind of squirrel, robins. Wardrobe used: DeFeet Woolie Boolie socks, Lake MX60 shoes, Craft T-shirt, Specialized fingerless gloves, Headsweats long-bill cap, Adidas bike shorts. Added Gore leg warmers, Specialized arm warmers, and Giant 3-season gloves for descent. Food and water: two granola bars, two boxes of raisins, 0.5 liters of chocolate milk (Dayton), 3+ liters of water. Bike notes: Got a late start due to tinkering with front end. Stopped three times more to tinker with it before I was more or less satisfied. Still not entirely happy with it. Lost the front chain twice when shifting to the big ring, so still have a little bit of fine tuning to do. Q-ring 30T performed beautifully. OSP trooper stopped to comment positively on the DiNotte taillight. Planet Bike fenders begin to flap above 48-49 mph, which requires a pinky to stabilize them. Edge 305 was great, except I forgot to give it a full charge. Discovered that my 12" Powerbook stowed behind the seat can act as a battery for the Edge 305 -- the USB cable just reaches. I missed having the 62T chainring several times.... |
| Weather Conditions: Partly cloudy, dry except for a few sprinkles. Very light southerly winds. |
