Mostly sunny skies with temperatures that started in the upper 50s and ended near 70. Winds started out light but increased with time and became moderately strong from the SW. The return trip was largely into these headwinds. Started ride at 10 a.m. and returned home at 2:00 p.m. I rode most of the ride with Livestrong jersey over base layer and tights over shorts. I removed the extra layers on the return trip.

Comments: Participated in 2010 Bike the Drive for my third consecutive year. Starting at the Fairmont Hotel, I took Columbus to Randolph to the path beside the Cancer Survivors Park (a total of 1.0 miles) to the starting point at Jackson and Lake Shore Drive. Heading north on LSD, I rode to the northernmost point of the loop at Bryn Mawr Avenue (rest stop); rode back to start/finish (rest stop); then rode to the southernmost point of the loop at the Museum of Science and Industry (rest stop). I then rode north to the turn-around at Fullerton Avenue and returned to Grant Park. Temperatures were in the mid-60s at the ride's starting time of 5:30 a.m., quickly warming into the 70s by ride's end. Light winds from the southeast. Skies were mostly sunny with perfect temperatures. I wore new style Livestrong jersey and black shorts.

Comments: Participated in the 2010 Trek 100 for my second consecutive year, which began at Trek world headquarters in Waterloo, Wisconsin. Unlike last year, however, I rode with Gary Sampson. We both completed the 36-mile route. Those electing to ride the 19 or 36 mile routes were started in groups beginning at 9:30 a.m. Gary and I arrived just after 9 a.m. and were in the first group released onto the course. The day started off foggy with comfortable temperatures in the low to mid-60s. The weather forecast suggested a cloudy but rain-free morning, followed by showers in the afternoon. This forecast proved accurate. With the exception of a few sprinkles half-way through the ride, the weather conditions were nice. Skies occasionally showed peaks of sunlight, but were cloudy most of the time. The route was the same as last year's ride. I passed farm fields, lovely Rock Lake (near Lake Mills), and wooded sections with lovely homes near that lake. Comments: A race against thunderstorms! I started my ride at 2:45 p.m. and ended around 4. Skies began as partly sunny with temperatures in the upper 80s and light winds. However, a line of fast-moving thunderstorms swept in, darkening the western sky for the last 2/3 of my ride. I started hearing thunder around Greenbrook and County Farm Roads and by the time I had turned onto Arlington, winds had become gusty. Skies had become quite dark, and I could have used some lights for my bike. The rain started falling as I crossed from the Indigo path onto Indigo Court. As I raced down Cloverdale, moderate to heavy rain began to fall and leaf clusters were being torn from trees all around me. It was good to get home!

Comments: Participated in the 2010 Wright Ride for my third consecutive year. The ride starts in downtown Oak Park, then heads south and west through River Forest, Berwyn, Riverside, Brookfield, La Grange Park, and Western Springs. Left home at 6:30 a.m. Bought coffee at Addison Starbucks en route to Oak Park. Started ride at 7:35. At the Riverside Water Tower rest stop at 8:30. At Western Springs water tower at 9:04. At Spring Rock Park rest stop at 9:15. Stopped for free Frappuccino at the Western Springs Starbucks at 9:35. Their facility had a wonderful shaded outdoor patio. Back at the Oak Park starting point around 11:00. Rode an additional 8-9 miles through Oak Park. Back at car at 11:37. During the ride, skies started off partly cloudy and gradually turned mostly sunny, with relatively low humidity and temperatures starting off in the mid 70s and peaking near 80 by ride's end. Light northerly winds.

I then began my first adventure onto the Salt Creek Greenway Trail, following Cosman, Arlington Heights, Brantwood, Carlisle, Clearmont, Ridge/Mittel, Bauman, [path], Prospect, [path], Brookwood, Forest Preserve, [Addison Road path], [path], [Cricket Creek Path], Villa, Thomas, Wildwood, and Ovaltine to the Great Western Trail. Retraced my route back to Busse Woods, then retraced the same route home. Started ride at 8:15 a.m. and returned home at 1:05 p.m. Skies were mostly sunny with temperatures in the upper 70s, low humidity, and light northeasterly winds. Comments: Participated in my first Boulevard Lakefront Tour. I awoke shortly after 5 a.m., was at the Army Trail Road Starbucks when they opened at 6 a.m., and reached the designated parking deck on the University of Illinois-Chicago's campus at 6:45. I rode the two blocks to the start/finish in the Chicago Circle Memorial Grove at Morgan and Taylor Streets and waited in line to pick up my registration packet (@6:58). The start of the 32-mile ride was supposed to commence at 7:30, but late-arriving 62-milers pushed my start time to about 7:55. The official ride description follows: The Boulevard Tour heads south through the Mexican-American community of Pilsen before crossing the Chicago River and turning east into Bridgeport. Riders continue east through Bridgeport and Bronzeville to Lake Michigan and the Chicago Park District's Lakefront Trail (@8:35) for a jaunt south to Hyde Park. Exiting the trail, participants will travel west along the Midway Plaisance and have the opportunity to pause at our water stop (@8:56-9:05; water, port-a-potties) about 11 miles into the ride. Heading north on beautiful Drexel Boulevard, riders pass through Kenwood and Bronzeville again on their way to Chinatown. Look for our rest stop (@9:50-10:14; snacks, water, port-a-potties) at the beautiful Ping Tom Memorial Park along the Chicago River about 18 miles into the ride. Heading west from the rest stop, riders weave through Pilsen to the heart of Chicago's Boulevard system. In the Lawndale neighborhood, participants will ride through Douglas Park before heading north along Independence Blvd. towards beautiful Garfield Park and our water stop (@11:08; water, port-a-potties), located about 26 miles into the ride. Continuing north, riders will follow the boulevards to the southern edge of Humboldt Park before returning south through the Ukrainian Village neighborhood and the Near West Side to the post-ride festival at the end of the 32-mile Boulevard Tour (@noon). I was back at my car at 12:11. Temperatures started in the low 70s at the onset of the ride to the upper 80s by the end of the ride, with moderately high humidity. Scattered morning clouds over the lake delayed the sun's appearance, but skies were mostly sunny thereafter.

Comments: Ride 2 of my "SeptemberFest" in Wisconsin. Rode the Glacial Drumlin State Trail with Gary S. Beginning just before 9:00 a.m., Gary and I drove from his house to Wales, then began our ride westward. We passed through Dousman and Sullivan before turning around near the intersection of Route 18 and County Road P. We then retraced our route back to Wales, which we reached at about 1:00. On the way back, we visited the Bicycle Doctor in Dousman. They adjusted my front brake pads, eliminating the squeal that had started the day before. I also purchased a pair of winter cycling gloves. Temperatures started in the mid-40s and rose to about 60 with very light easterly breezes. I wore long tights and my riding jacket over my Livestrong jersey over a long sleeve base layer.
