Thank you Slo_Joe. It feels good to be back riding. Having lost 4 out of the last 6 months of riding has really hit the fitness but it will come back.

113:38:32 as of my commute into the office this morning. I just got back from a supported bike tour without much in the way of internet access so this is my first chance to check in for awhile.

Anyway, I owe the Highflyer toll on bike maintenance competence.

I am probably less competent than I think but I can do a lot of semi-skilled maintenance operations including replacing housing and cables, installing brake pads, changing bearings in my hubs, adjusting derailleurs, fixing flats, truing wheels and even once on the side of the rode, reconnecting a chain that had come apart and lost its master link. One holiday season, I had my local bike mechanic create a list of tools I should have for working on my bike to use as a gift registry provided he would teach me how to use them. It worked pretty well with my family cooperating and me going in for instruction on a Friday in January except that I seemed to attract customers so the instruction kept getting interrupted.

The only problem is I don't feel a lot of confidence in my work and don't really like spending all that time doing the work plus if I don't pay my mechanic to do the middling work he might not be able to stay in business to be there for the more complicated work.

I did, however, help a fellow rider repair a flat on the third day of the tour helping her get the tire off the rim, find and patch the hole and find a likely suspect for the cause in a piece of glass in the tire. I saw her the last evening of the ride and the tire hadn't gone flat since then so apparently I did a competent job in that instance.
