 First Climbs
Wind has finally died down and yesterday's flurries didn't stick. Lifted weights in the morning and went out for a ride in the cold north wind. Opted for a climbing day where the course would offer some protection from the bitter wind. Did three climbs today with two rated and one that probably would only be considered a climb in the early season. First climb was up the Dug Road and had a pretty good spin and thought I wasn't pushing too hard but did see some spots along the way. Ended up cresting with a nine-one which isn't too bad considering I am still carrying too much weight. Need to get it over ten. Next came the rolling climb up through Moreland which I again spun. Final climb was up Bronson Hill where I hit my first steep climb with the grade topping out at eighteen percent. I usually crack on the steep section but it went fairly well today. I did crack when I got near the top where the trees thin and headed straight into the wind. After the steep section the last section looks fairly easy but it is still eleven percent. Crested the climb into some snow flurries with 2000 feet gain after ten miles of effort. Next ten miles was normally fast downhill but really kept the speed down as the roads are still liberally covered with sand and the wind chill was causing my fingertips to sting. Overall not a bad early season ride. Temperatures are supposed to improve into the fifties tomorrow as the wind shifts to the south.
