 Fast Ride
After a couple of weeks of snow and below freezing temperatures the weather finally broke and got a nice enough day for me to consider riding outside. Turned out to be a fine day with a warm sun and only a moderate breeze. Started out heading up Old Odessa hill and stayed out of the saddle for the entire steep section of the climb. Ended up not being very efficient near the top but seemed like a good idea to toughen up the legs. Spun the upper section of the climb and turned in a good time arriving at SR 224 with an 11.3 average. Had a slight tailwind up SR 228 to finish off the climb with a slightly above average of 12.6. Felt that I was having an excellent start of the ride and decided to push hard for the first hour and then back off for the remaining miles. Pushed the big gear once I got over the high point and hammered the rolling downgrade to Mechlenburg. Got the speeds up into the upper thirties for a couple of sections and could hardly believe the speeds I was holding. Tried hard to make Mechlenburg with a 17.0 avg but fell a little short with a 16.8 avg. Its been a few years since I've clocked a seventeen so wasn't too disappointed. Held the effort to complete the first hour near Perry City with a little over eighteen miles in. Dropped the effort level to Trumansburg and held an easy pace up the six mile climb through Searsburg through the Finger Lakes Forest. Tried to pick the pace back up into the wind back trough Logan, but didn't make much headway. Wind blowing across the snow pack had a good bite to it and made for some chilly riding on the way home, but overall it was a pretty nice day. The north wind still rules the upstate and will bring waves of freezing weather back tomorrow so looks like this will be my last day of riding outside for February.
