 Rock Stream-Beaver Dams
Had more frigid temperatures, high winds and snow yesterday. We had planned on a group ride today, but that was when the temperature was forecast to be in the high fifties. Upstate NY reality set it though, and the real temperature never got out of the forties. And not only did the warm weather not show up, but the only rider to show up was Iron Doug. On the plus side the winds had died down and were less than ten. For most of the ride the wind was out of the west. First section of the course was the same course I rode on Thursday. Pace for me was about the same although I wasn't aided by a tailwind today. I, of course, was dropped on the first climb and every climb thereafter throughout the ride. I tried to maintain a steady pace and limit my losses to under a minute each climb. Ice and snow were still evident but mainly in the ditches and none in the roads. I spent eighty percent of my time sucking wheel or chasing after the climbs when Iron Doug didn't wait at the top. After twenty miles and four climbs we reached the goal of Sugar Hill and had twenty-five miles of mostly downgrade to enjoy. First section had a pretty good crosswind, and I hid from it the best I could. Legs got a little tired around mile thirty-five, and I fell off the pace again up the first section of the Johnson Hill Road. Kept up on the downhills after that, and we exchanged pulls over the last seven miles and kept the pace in the mid to upper twenties with the help of a following crosswind. Pretty good ride all-in-all. Temperature was borderline but was dressed properly, and it wasn't a factor. Legs felt good most of the ride and would have done much better if I just could lose ten pounds of Christmas Cookie inspired fat.
