 Hard Effort
Went out hard today with what now passes for the closest thing I have to a time trial. Did the Rock Stream Beaver Dams course with its five early climbs and then twenty five miles of downgrade. Wind was out of the north today which isn't the best wind for the course but at least it was fairly light. Didn't do any hammering on the flat section to Watkins but had a good spin and go to Watkins with a fair time but lost some momentum due to traffic lights and started the climb with a less than optimal time. Better than average first climb and pushed the big gear to the bottom of the second climb at the ten mile mark. Caught a tailwind up the second climb and went over the top with a fair time in Reading Center. Third climb up Church St was the weakest of the day and lost a little off the average speed. Maintained the pace through the rollers and false flats aided by the light tailwind and then had a good climb up Sugar Hill. Went over the top of the climbing section with a sixteen-two. My record for the whole course is a nineteen-two that had me going over the top with a seventeen average, so it didn't look like I would be breaking any records. Still had some good climbing in and legs felt good. Normally I try to pick up a tenth of a mile on the average for every mile of riding on the downhill section so assumed a good downhill would get me an eighteen-seven overall. Had a better than second half and finished off with an eighteen-nine. Most of the downhill was pretty strong with the usual weak spots through Beaver Dams and over the top of Johnson Hollow. Tried to get a nineteen by hammering the final seven miles down SR 14 but the headwind took the edge off and legs couldn't keep the pace through the final mile of the curse. Still a very good ride considering how tired my legs have felt lately and having to deal with the lights in Watkins. Good day on the bike.
