 Hard Effort in Rain
Got a short window to get some miles in between the rain storms. It was doubtful that I would be able to avoid all the rain so opted for a rain jacket to keep me dry. Today's goal was to ride as hard as possible on the Mechlenberg course and try to best the elusive eighteen mile an hour barrier. Went out hard and stood up the lower section of Old Odessa hill and had good spin over the last mile and put in a season best eleven five at the first time check in Odessa. Kept the pressure on and continued to push the pace up the second half of climb to Smithville and had another best at a twelve eight average at the time check. Had a pretty good tailwind over the hill to Mechlenberg but wasn't able to keep the speed in the upper twenties that I needed to get to the base of the second climb with a seventeen. A light rain started to fall and continued through most of the remainder of the ride. Although my rain jacket was welcome, it was also flapping quite a bit and dampening my speed. Still was able to pull into Mechlenberg with a sixteen eight, but the average started to go downhill quickly as I headed up the second climb. I had been riding all out and finally had to back off the effort on the climb. Climbed fairly well in the big chainring but couldn't put out the watts I needed. Did okay through the sway and had a good downhill but started to bog down in a slight headwind on my way to Bennettsberg. Average was holding steady but was running out of real estate to get the average back up. Finished off with a good downhill on Skyline, but kept the speed down a bit to wet roads. Ended up with a seventeen four that was short of my goal but made a strong effort regardless.
