 Tour Da County
Drove up to Fulton, NY for a ride with the Oswego County boys. They put on three rides with a century, half century and quarter century. Their century went off at six thirty which was way too early for me with a two hour drive time to get there, so I opted for half century. There were only twenty riders that started headed out for the fifty miles of rolling terrain. There were quite a few fancy bikes at the start with disc brakes and electronic shifting very evident. Hadn't paid too much attention to new technology until I started building my new bike, but it appears that I will still be well behind on the tech curve. But being a Ludite, I will be very content with using components that I am used to. We rolled out of the parking lot and the group immediately shattered. Three riders went off the front quickly. I waited for a bit to see if anyone else was going to try to cross the gap, but either there was no interest or lack of ability. I ended up hammering across the gap without too much strain and joined the front group. Front three riders turned out to be a big guy on a time trial bike and two of the Oswego boys. They said that the time trial guy was planning on riding the course at a twenty two average, and there plan was to suck wheel. It seemed like a good plan to me, so I just hopped on the end of the line. That was pretty much how the rest of the ride went. Didn't have any problem holding the pace. There were quite a few intersections that broke up the pace. There really wasn't much climbing with only a couple of short climbs. At the latter stages of the ride I was able to pull away on the grades but waited when I went over the top. Thought I felt good enough to ride away, but that it would be fairly rude after drafting for forty miles. Turned out to be a fairly fast paced friendly group ride. Got a good workout in.
