 Whatever Ride
Wind was blowing hard out of the north that limited how much speed work we could do today unless we repeated last week course. Body is depressed with various infections so wasn't sure how much speed I could generate today anyhow. Asked Joe if he wanted to work on hills instead of speed and his reply was whatever. So picked a course that would climb into the wind and have a long tailwind section at the end. Started with the usual climb up Old Odessa. We didn't hammer it today as Joe dropped his chain at the bottom and Mark and I kept a reasonable pace until he caught back on, but by that time the hill was pretty much over. We caught a slight tailwind between Odessa and the Junction and got in four or five miles of fast riding. Mark didn't seem to be putting out his usual massive watts and didn't have any trouble holding on. We headed into the wind on SR 13 and were keeping a moderate pace when we saw a rider ahead. Took some effort to catch him, and it turned out to be a guy on a high end mountain bike. We turned off of SR 13 and hit a shallow climb on the Sebring Road. I set a good pace and was able to drop the boys without too much effort. Crested the hill with a good gap and kept the pace on the backside. Kept my pace high enough to hold Joe off until I got to the bottom of the third climb of the day through Trumbles Corners. Mark was struggling off the back and hadn't closed on the downgrade, so Joe and I took it easy on the climb until Mark rejoined. We did a few more miles of downhill and headwind before finishing off the ride with some speed work between Mecklenberg and Odessa. The first half was rolling upgrade and we took hard pulls aided by the headwind. I hit the last section of upgrade hard and Joe attacked on the second part of the climb. Mark was able to close the gap, and I drafted him back up to Joe. After another hard mile we arrived at the final climb, and I hit it hard and opened a good gap. Joe pursued me down the backside but I thought I had enough gap to hold it all the way to Odessa, Joe of course disagreed. We will never find out though as I slowed down at a turn since Mark was out of sight ,and I wanted to make sure he made the turn. We regrouped and hit the final couple miles of fast downhill. We were taking thirty mile an hour pulls with occasional attacks thrown in. Had one good counterattack but was unable to finish it off. Joe took one final hard pull to the stop sign and opened a small gap, but alas the ride was pretty much over other than the final descent back to Montour. Didn't feel well at the start but body actually performed well when I needed it to. Had some decent climbing although it was mostly shallow fast climbing without any steep sections. Turned out to be easier than I thought it would as Mark wasn't riding his best today. It was a fast, fun forty for me though.
