Comments: A leisure ride with Bob Davis. Along the route we stopped 4 times chatting and planning. 1st stop was the New Speedway in Garland. 2nd stop was to survey the repair progress on the Clarkson-Parma T.L. Road steel decked bridge (my bridge). Next we stopped and chatted with Gene Cecano and our final pit stop was Griff's Brewery. I sampled a "Stage 10" -a hot pepper ale.
Arriving home hours later than planned but Ginny had a fabulous dinner awaiting us. Bob went home with 4 bottles of my home-brew, -two were the last of my Cherry Wheat for Marci to enjoy. |

Comments: Checked on the status of the C-P T L bridge reconstruction over the Brockport -Otis Creek. Work is progressing. The steel decking has been completely removed, with only the cement abutments, the 7 main steel beams and some rubble remaining. It appears to be a total rebuild. My curiosity wonders if the new decking will be steel grating like the original design. |

Comments: Ride of Silence (Rochester version) My participation again this year was to honor the memory of Jerry Vogt as well as Lee Bausch.
The Ride of Silence is an international ride conducted every year on the the third Wednesday in May at 7PM. The R.o.S. honors those who have been injured or killed riding a bike.
My third year for participation in the R.o.S. -started wet then cleared; Rain on the way to the start of the ride cleared up rapidly, but not before giving Bob and I a good soak. The diverse group was well chaperoned and guided along the route by the Rochester Police. I rode along side Bob Davis like previous years. If there is any criticism with the manner in which the ride was conducted it must be about the pace, -WAY TOO SLOW!! Most of the ride speed averaged well below 7 mph! Travelling the 8.8 mile route was a 1 hour and 15 minute excursion. |

Comments: The battery capacity on the CCX is incredible and allows for greater rider versatility for negotiating speed and distance. There is plenty of capacity for hills encountered along a typical commute.
On this 18.72 mile ride, the 58# CCX enabled my 239# physique to negotiate the ride at 17.2 mph in "ECO" mode, -with little drop in battery voltage. The readout on the display showed 55.2 volts remaining, -a use of 2.6 volts. https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/3688511145
Useful battery capacity boils down to an equation involving Rider effort: (Rider-vs-Battery output). Any size "Ah capacity" of a battery will power an ebike adequately until it runs low. Ultimately, a 13 Ah battery will run out of useful energy before a 19 Ah, 52-volt monster -like on the CCX. So battery size, along with rider effort, are significant considerations for powering an ebike on a long ride.
Also relating to energy use, is steepness/grade along a route, as well as the distance. Other factors on battery usage are wind and rider weight, as well as battery voltage. Another significant factor to consider is system voltage. A higher voltage system can supply more power to the motor. Finally, if pedaling is not a desired activity for negotiating up a hill, -then I guess one could try walking. |
