Comments: Seneca State Park meander. Over and back on Game Preserve Rd. I was a little surprised that the park was open in these days of plague. Playgrounds were closed but parking areas and trails were open. The place wasn't humming, but not dead either. There are several miles of road there, quite pleasant for biking.

Comments: Potomac ramble. Out on Piney Meetinghouse. Back on Travilah. Went half a mile down the C&O, but it was so packed with pedestrians, it wasn't any fun, so I turned back.

Must have seen 30 cyclists. Hundreds of dog walkers and day hikers, too. I think a lot of folks have cabin fever.

Comments: ICC Tunnel. Been through the tunnel dozens of times in a car. Always wondered what was above. Found the neighborhood. It's on Olde Mill Run, which comes off Muncaster Mill right across from St. Francis Church. The road above the tunnel is the only way in to the neighborhood. There's nothing but green-space above the tunnel, so a bridge would have done. This way keeps the noise down and makes the highway a little less intrusive. I've never seen anything like it. Kind of creative. Must have been expensive, though.

Comments: Damascus ramble. Got rained out yesterday, so I about doubled up today. Usual way to the top of Wildcat, then left on Watkins. Loghouse, Newbury, and Sweepstakes took me to MD27 and into Damascus. Went left on Bethesda Church, and left on Purdum. Don't recall being on this section of Purdum before. It's very pretty, but also hilly, and it was pretty hot today -- high 80's. At Mountain View, a left, and down a big descent to a right on Kings Valley. Next, a left on Kingstead, right on Oak, and right on MD27. Took 27 down to a left at Kings Valley and then home the usual way. Extrapolated out to a century, this ride would have 8000 feet of climb -- more than the Civil War Century.

Comments: Groovy Grove. Warm -- high 80's but quite pleasant for biking. n.b. Put Kool Stop brake shoes on the front of the hybrid a while back. They stop fine, but I could't found any way to get them to stop squealing. Jobst's trick of dragging the brakes through a puddle didn't work. There was plenty of life left on the Kool Stops but I replaced them with Shimano shoes. Mileage was 29110. The new shoes were quiet on a short test ride. On today's ride, they weren't squealing, but they didn't sound good. After a turn or two of the wheel, there's a grinding sound.

Comments: Washington Grove. Stopped to see Ken. Took a tumble on Hickory Rd in WG. Hit a pothole and my hands slipped off the bars. (I've been trying to rid myself of the bad habit of putting my thumbs over the top, rather than under. Maybe this will help spur me.)

As far as I can tell, I'm not badly hurt -- scraped knee, scraped elbow, and a raspberry on my shoulder, all on the right side. Didn't see the shoulder scrape till I took off my shirt. Shirt seems none the worse for wear. Bike is fine, too. Was going pretty slow by the time I flopped down. Didn't hit my head. No loss of consciousness. Hardly any pain.

It was a nice day, and despite the fall, I had a nice ride.

Comments: Around Triadelphia. Used to do this often on Sunday mornings. That was before I hit the deer. Howard County roads are much better maintained than Montgomery County. Saw the eye doctor yesterday. Afterwards, I was still dazzled by the dilating drops, so I skipped, so I felt it was OK to double up today. My longest ride this year. Had a pretty good pace -- just a hair over 14.

Raleigh Hybrid ticked over 30,000 today. And the true distance has to be a lot more than that, because I had the bike for two years before putting on an odometer. I've certainly gotten my money's worth out of this bike.

Comments: Gregg, Zion, Muncaster, Washington Grove. Laid up a couple of days with health issues, so I stretched it a little this afternoon. Gregg Rd is just about the prettiest biking place around. Rather than looping out on Ga., I doubled back to Zion and down to Brookeville. Light was fading by 6 when I finished. Summer goes by so fast.

Davis Mill is now open all along Wildcat branch. The road has been closed the better part of a year while they shoried up a couple hundred feet of the bank.
