Age 5, first bike, banana seat & purple frame from Sears. Broke my arm on it a year later - on Easter when my dad took off the training wheels to teach me to ride. Swore I wouldn't ride again until I could balance without pedaling. Once I regained confidence, I was crazy with the freedom.

Age 14, first road bike, Schwinn World Sport, black. Bought toe clips with money I earned from writing a story about a local charity ride for the local newspaper. Went on a week long bikes & science trip for teens. It rocked. Rode everywhere until I got a car.

Age 18, 1989 Specialized Rockhopper (pre-shocks), bought two years used. My dad thought that'd be better than my road bike for living on a big college campus. I loved riding around because, again without a car, it meant speed and freedom. I took a bicycle course in my sophomore year, after learning to change a flat, the class was solely riding around East Lansing, and logging your ride. Tried being fancy, and ended up needing a new stem and fork. My dad loaned me his Cannondale road bike and I kicked my ride partner's mountain bike butt.

Later, at a different school, I discovered trail riding and enjoyed that for a year or two.

My twenties were mostly spent going on the occasional bike ride, but no longer taking it seriously. These years were also spent getting fatter.

Summer of 2005, 32 years old, 225 pounds.
I'm riding my dad's old Cannondale (still his favorite bike), but not seriously. I've played around on trails on the old Rockhopper, but nothing serious. Excitement is palpable, though, I've finally got OLN, and I'm sitting and watching the Tour 3 hours a day when that Lance commercial comes on, the one where he's jogging, and everyone starts exercising. It struck me: Here I am, sitting on fat butt, watching people bicycle for 3 hours a day. ?!? I set up a trainer with the Cannondale, and rode for 30-60 minutes each day of the Tour. This coincided with finding out what "Alarmingly High Triglycerides" means. Yikes!

When the Tour wraps up, I get on the road, doing 10 miles a day. In August, I decide to start riding farther, and start logging my miles. A week later, I meet some guys who invite me to ride with them, and they tell me about the MS 150. I think, no way could I be ready to do it (and raise the scratch) in a month. They suggest the one day event. A week later, I'm in, I ended up doing the whole thing, and raising a lot more than I expected.

Now, I'm riding 100 miles a week, I'm down to 190 (as of the Ides of January), and enjoying the Trek my dad traded me when I hit the 1000 mile mark after two months. I still love the Cannondale in my photo (from August, 15 pounds ago), but I love the Trek more.

Single Speed Road bike
Description:  I found this bike in the trash. I stripped the dérailleurs, the rear brake, changed out the saddle, chain, bar tape, and front brake, and added in some wheels with a singlespeed (42x15, 73.6 gear inches) setup. I made the spacers on the cassette hub out of a Coke can. This bike is fairly light for old steel, and fairly quick. I lurve it.

Lifetime Odometer: 701.0 miles
