I began my "serious" riding in 2003, after the kids had left the nest and I had more time to ride. I bought my first recumbent in April, 2005 and slowed down briefly after my heart surgery in 2018. In December, 2010, I was severed employment (after 38 years of service) after a corporate merger. I took that opportunity and the severance package to retire.
Since then, I have tried to ride four days a week. In December, 2009, I bought my first high racer, a Corsa 650c. In February, 2013 I bought a CA2.0.
I have raced a couple of 12 hour races and look forward to racing more of them.
In October, 2015, I rode in the inaugural Natchez Trace 444 event. This was my first night ultra event beginning at 6:20pm Oct 2. It was also my first ultra event in the rain - for the first 4 hours or so. I developed chest congestion and began coughing up phlegm which eventually became bad enough that I withdrew after 300 miles. It was an inauspicious start to more than 12 hour ultras.
After 18 months of struggling at higher heart rates, on April 10, 2018, I had a double coronary artery bypass surgery. I was lucky that I caught it before it was more serious. My cardiologist told me I was very lucky, I would not have survived a heart attack based on the location of the blockage.
Beginning in June, 2018, I began riding again.
I began riding a trike and my CA2 alternating. I am on DAPT and with a reduced dosage, my probability of internal bleeding issues in event of a crash are reduced but still there. In May, 2020, I purchased a new Vendetta V20 and began riding it.
My WUCA membership has lapsed for now.
