My brother sent me this link because he is considering buying one of these:
www.indiegogo.com/projects/sdream-the-smartest-foldable-all-terrain-ebike#/

I am not sure I would want to buy a fat-tired, foldable e-bike but I think his main concerns are whether or not he would actually ever get it (risk of buying something from a crowd-funded company) and the quality.

Any thoughts?

Can he get his money back if this doesn't get off the ground? If not, I would wait.

I doubt it. Technically, what one is doing is investing in a company rather than buying a product with the caveat that the company can buy out his investment by providing the indicated product. If they never get the product made, I suppose he could try to force a liquidation of the company and recover whatever portion of his investment he might be entitled to but this is very difficult.

The campaign is being run through Indiegogo. They state: "Marketplace orders have guaranteed shipping if a seller doesn't stick to their shipping schedule, we'll refund your purchase. Most products are hot off successful crowdfunding campaigns, so there's no better place to find cool innovations before they go mainstream." However, their policy is that one can request a refund if the campaign is still active and if the product hasn't been delivered ( support.indiegogo.com/hc/en-us/articles/526876-Refunds-Can-I-get-my-money-back- ). For this particular campaign, there are 23 days left (as of 2/27 which means that after the latter part of March, Indiegogo will disperse the funds to Sdream and one would have to work with them to get any money back. Note that since this is well before the promised delivery date of June I doubt one would be able to get a refund through Indiegogo.

Personally, I think this is all very deceiving on the part of Indiegogo. One can find the information that states you just have to trust the campaigner that you will get the "perk" ( support.indiegogo.com/hc/en-us/articles/206389917-Does-Indiegogo-Guarantee-Perks- ) but it took me several clicks to get there. The initial page that comes up looks a lot like an e-commerce store where you are ordering a product for future delivery.

WHEN (?) they come into stores I'll go look at them - and THEN decide if I want one or not.

All this "here's what we'll do - MAYBE" is just a good formula for creating a lot of headaches. No thanks!!
