Thanks to Fredwina for hosting this discussion in 2008.

"Randonneuring is long-distance unsupported endurance cycling. This style of riding is non-competitive in nature, and self-sufficiency is paramount. When riders participate in randonneuring events, they are part of a long tradition that goes back to the beginning of the sport of cycling in France and Italy. Friendly camaraderie, not competition, is the hallmark of randonneuring."

Taken from the Randonneurs USA Website www.RUSA.org

Rides are recorded in kilometers, not miles, and for completing "brevets" of 200k, 300k, 400k, and 600k, one might obtain a pretty little medal like this:

or even THIS:

photo - FloridaBiker (2010)

and of course none of it would be possible at all, except for the organization that makes it all possible, Audax Club Parisien that brings Paris Brest Paris together every four years:

www.audax-club-parisien.com/

So, here is our thread for all things randonneuring. We've had discussions in previous years and I'll dig them up and post links to them here, also. Also, if you will post your home club's website, I'll build a list in the headline post here for everyone's easy reference.

Now if this isn't quite enough distance, there are brevets of 1000k and 1200k that you might find more to your liking.

Shenandoah 1200 - June 11th www.geocities.com/shenandoah1200/

Gold Rush (California/Oregon) - July 6-10 www.davisbikeclub.org/goldrush/

Colorado Last Chance Randonee - Sept 9-12 www.rmccrides.com/lastchance.htm

Endless Mountains 1240 - Sept 30 - Oct 4 Pa Randonneurs

Some links for local randonneuring clubs can be found through links at the RUSA website. Here are a few:

Lone Star Randonneurs: www.lonestarrandon.org
Texas Time Trials: Texas Time Trials Website

Seattle International Randonneurs: seattlerando.org

Here's a nice article SloJoRecumbo found that really embodies the spirit of randonneuring: www.ahands.org/cycling/bicycling/velocio.html

Ride on!!

Tomorrow, Seattle Randonneurs sorta kicks off the season with a couple of permanents and Week One of our annual winter training series, I think started several years ago by Terry Z. I'll be riding out at 7:00 with a group of 15 on Permanent #531, a newly approved route we did in late December with several snow detours. Hopefully we won't have too many detours from this week's flooding.

Florida Randonneurs are getting a start to the season tomorrow, also. I'm looking forward to folks' ride reports.

I'm really looking forward to seeing how the body is going to react to the longer distances this year. The furthest I've been so far is 238K.

I've already ridden a 300k and a 200k. One more 200k next week, and the year goes on...

Look'n forward to my first in Gainesville, FL next week. Fun part is that there will be 10 Bacchetta recumbents, including John Schlitter who set the RAAM solo recumbent record. Even though there's no first place on brevets, John only knows one speed: FAST.

Me? I'll see them at the start and at dinner. Slo is my name.

Oregon Randonneurs' season doesn't start until March, but I'll be doing at least two 200K perms before then - I earned my first R12 last year (still waiting for that medal - got my SR medal last week) and need to keep the streak going. In addition to working on an "R24," my randonneuring plans for 2009 include the Gold Rush (and of course the qualifying series) and perhaps a few of the Seattle brevets (the March 200K and chili feed, for sure).

So Joe, will we see you in the PNW this season?
