 1st PCW: 10 rides 174.2 miles
Somewhat grueling finish to my first PCW; Not the bike miles. As a School Bus driver, getting out of the house early enough to commute on bike can be challenging. First thing in the morning it's a race with bus traffic. On the afternoon commute it seems that the wind adds to the challenge of maintaining a good cadence.

This afternoon on my way out I forgot my helmet. It's easy this time of the year to forget the lid. Mostly with the various layers of dress the helmet goes on after balaclava. The Balaclava covering feels so complete that occasionally when in a hurry, I have started down the drive and onto the road before I realize my helmet isn't on my head. So that was the case this afternoon. A tenth of a mile into the ride I turn back to retrieve my helmet. I had already gotten a late start and now I was even more pressed for time. Needing to get 8 miles down the road and onto a bus in 40 minutes is doable. However, steady 5-10mph headwinds mean extra effort to take my butt down the road in a timely manner. By Friday the week of double commutes has taken a toll on my stamina. I'm being honest when I say I'm a bit short on reserves at this point.

Starting back with my helmet on, I came upon an automobile stopped in the road. It was kind of curious to me that a car would be stopped not pulled over. Looked like three young people were sitting in it. Maybe they had the emergency flashers working -not 100% positive about that. Pulling alongside them I saw an apparently dead deer not 2 feet in front of the car. The Doe looked dead on it's side, directly in front of the automobile. Passing the car, seeing the dead Doe, I glanced back to the car. Saw a tuft of fur wedged into a crevice between the grill and hood. I'm guessing the crash was a slow speed event as the Deer carcass looked undamaged. The car didn't look too bad either. Maybe the deer was only knocked cold...

Any way, this is my first "perfect commuter week"(PCW)! I have racked up substantial miles achieving my PCW. Should finish up the week with my first 200 mile week this year!

This PCW was a real challenge for me. Particularly the pre-dawn leg of the commute, if leaving much past 6:05AM, I'd have to pour it on in order to progress far enough along the way so as to avoid getting stuck behind ...SCHOOL BUSES! Most Bus Drivers know who that cyclist is at 6:30 in the morning on C-P.T.L.Rd. To the extent they can, the other Bus Drivers have looked after my way and in a sense shepherded me along.

Wednesday at 6:35 I was passed by bus 58, Shauna's bus. Then as Bus 58 made the next stop, me and other commuters were made to wait behind those flashing red jersey lights as slow moving students boarded the bus.

But mostly every other day this week it was a race of sort. Trying to stay one stop ahead of firstly Bus 3 from Brockport, and then Bus 58 in the Hilton School district. This felt a bit like a Cat and Mouse "catch and release" affair with me being the mouse.

It's easier when I play this cat and mouse game with Garbage Collection trucks. I don't have to stop and wait for them to load the truck. Additionally their more frequent stops make the truck the mouse and me the cat.

Anyway, tomorrows ride will be a very relaxed "take time to hear the birds sing" ride.
