A great ride today -RBC Impromptu style( dayrides.appspot.com/ ). 9 RBC riders and me with the Bianchi, including BruceW -ride leader. Jules, a high performance cyclist was on the ride too. Jules is currently undergoing Chemo-Therapy battling Leukemia. Jules stamina is EPIC!
We had a bit more elevation today than the last Kueka trip. And of course everyone was faster than me -not a problem! In fact any ride I can average more than 13 MPH with nearly 2900 feet of elevation gain, is a fast pace for me! Tail winds Northbound on Rte 54 were a pleasure.
On the ride I traveled several miles with Steve, a substitute Geology teacher who grew up in West Irondequoit, and currently working for the Greece School District. Steve was great company -a formerly avid racer, and all round athletic 52 Y/O. Steve's Wife was also on the ride, but keeping a faster pace farther along the route.
Steve's racing years included riding with an individual I have known as the owner of the Chess Center on Norris Drive. Ron Lohrman a former NYS Scholastic Chess Champion from the late 1960's, was also a competitive racer with many a trophy. To my astonishment Lohrman is known not only for his competitive Chess, but bike racing too. The diversity of new friends, and finding mutual history and common background, is often a significant and enjoyable aspect of group rides.
