Headed north out of Gaffney for a rolling hill ride to Boiling Springs. It started out on the cool side with a good deal of fog. Plan for the day was a touring pace as attempt at a faster rate didn't go well yesterday. First few miles out of South Carolina were a long slight uphill grade on fairly large though low traffic roads. Once into NC the roads got hillier. Climbed through a state park that turned out to be some high-quality riding. Spurred on by the scenic terrain actually picked up the pace through the hills. Rolled into Boiling Springs in high spirits with fairly strong legs but lost a little speed navigating through the fairly large town. Halfway into the ride started heading south into a slight headwind. Terrain continued to be mostly rolling hills through farmland. Climbs started getting bigger as I got closer to the finish in Gaffney. Had my fifteen average after forty miles but really started to lose times as the legs started going soft. Got totally trashed on a three quarter mile nine percent grade. Thought I might recover some time over the last three miles as they were mostly downhill with a light tailwind but lost more time with numerous traffic lights and left hand turns through heavy traffic. Course was mostly great riding although the last ten miles was a bit challenging with my low fitness level. Did get three days of riding in a row this week that is a promising improvement.
