Decided to test out the chest pains and see if I can ride without the body locking down. Weather was quite mild for July in the low seventies but at the cost of a light rain. Headed up the Cronk Road past the cemetery where I will most likely end my days. The total hill is a mile and a half long averaging six percent that seems pretty reasonable. Bad part is the first half averages thirteen with steeper sections depending on how you cut the curves. Figured it would be a good route to test the chest condition. Came out of the saddle out of the gate but didn't last long. Kept my head down and when I looked up couldn't really fathom how I was doing as the trees are so thick I couldn't see how fat I was from the hairpin turn that takes one off the hospital hill and heads up by the cemetery. It's nasty steep through the turn but there is a brief respite as the road flattens as it passes the bridge over the falls. It's over quick though as it then goes back to thirteen to fifteen percent. I was tapped out struggling in the granny in a light rain but on the plus side there wasn't any unwelcome mystery pain. There was only the normal cycling pain associated with being overweight on a steep grade. Was relieved once I got over the steep section and above the gravestones where the top of the climb varies between a more friendly two to six percent. Took a half hour to do the first five miles but after that it was mostly downhill. Went out onto SR 14 and pedaled hard to the top of Johnson Hollow trying to keep the heart weight and power up. Had to stop due to heavy traffic on the highway before making the left into the hollow. After that it was a two-mile upgrade slog before the fast downhill starts. Kept good speed downwards aided by my extra pounds. Rain had stopped but roads were still wet and so didn't get to do the final steep section as fast as I would have liked though I probably would be okay with the disc brakes aiding the stop before getting back on the highway. Forgot to downshift at the stop sign and struggled to get going again as my downhill gear selection wasn't best for restarting from a dead stop. Caught a fair tailwind through the slot which was nice but as it had a strong east vector it wasn't as nice as it could have been. The west wind stirs things up down through the valley, but when it is out of the east it is much calmer. Finished strong and felt good though I don't think I have the fitness at present to hold a strong pace for much more than an hour. Tougher route than I have been riding that hopefully will help me out of my funk. Just hope I don't catch another bug from riding in the rain.
