Went out for some climbing today and it went bad really fast. Headed up Havana Glen that has always been challenging and today I was barely able to answer the challenge. It started out fairly well but as soon as I hit the fifteen plus sections my leg muscles didn't seem to be able to produce any power at all. Soon enough it felt like the only thing keeping me going were my leg bones. In younger stronger days when things were going well, I used to envision my legs as made of oak. Today they felt like popsicle sticks and I actual thought at one point that they might snap. Weighed getting off and walking or turning back but feared if I did so I would be done with cycling. Many years ago, when running one evening I slowed down and thought I can't do this anymore. While I still walk a few miles a day, I haven't run since. I was fearful that this might be a similar moment. Kept going painfully and eventually crested after quite a bit of unpleasantness. Felt a little better on the grade to Odessa but wasn't able to get many watts out of the legs. Once to Odessa I spun up Ridge Road through Catherine to Seymoreville. Was helped a bit by the north wind. Cut down Middle Road and continued dropping to Fitpatrick. Finished off the ride with a fast coast back into the valley. Painful depressing day on the bike. Was hoping that taking more time off the bike would improve the quality of my rides but that doesn't seem to be working. Body continues to degrade regardless of what I do.
