 Uphill in Snow
Finally got a day with the temperature above freezing and even with a little bit of sun. Got out on the mountain bike after lifting and headed up the rail trail to Millport again to avoid a blustery west wind. Ride started out fairly well with some light snow on the single track before hitting the rail trail. Trail runs along the west side of the valley and snow on the trail varied from hardpack where there was some foot and snow mobile traffic to virgin snow in the middle miles where the valley is deep and won't get much sunshine until February. I did get to see the sun even though it is far to the south and just barely above the ridge line at two in the afternoon. Had a pretty good time until the snow got a little over two inches deep and then pedaling got difficult and eventually the aching quads arrived. Did pass another rider going down the trail on a fat bike. Tried to ride in his track without much success and went back to breaking my own trail. Concentrated on not tapping out and tried to keep moving forward. Last two miles seemed to take an eternity. Probably toughest two miles I've done this year. Got a brief respite as I hit a road section in Millport where I could finally stand up and stretch my back. Returned to the trail and more snow for another mile before reaching the Post Office. The section was flatter and had more foot traffic so riding was quite a bit easier. I did tap out going through one small gully section that I lost traction on and had to finally tap out. Returned via the highway that I thought would be easier with the high winds. Thought I might be able to get some serious coasting in but was hampered by the west wind swirling through the valley. I would be sailing along near twenty when occasional gust of a debris ridden north wind would hit pelting me and robbing me of my momentum. Turned out to be a very hard ride overall but on the plus side is was warm enough and was dressed properly so temperature wasn't painful.
