 Eldridge Park
Opted for Eldridge Park again to do a medium slow ride avoiding any climbs after two days of steep hills. It was hot again but a few degrees less than the last time I went to the park. Started out up the valley into a slight headwind and tried to keep a steady pressure on the pedals at least until Johnson Hollow. Did okay for two miles but started to fade before the hollow that is at seven miles of one to two percent grade. Didn't achieve the desired fifteen falling quite short. Legs faltered a bit over the next two short climbs to the top of the hump in Pine Valley. Lost a good bit of time but figured I would get some speed in before Horseheads and try to get the average up to fourteen. It's only a moderate goal for July but is normally my average time for February. Struggled to get up to speed and was also hindered by hitting all three lights red. Missed my mark by a few seconds that wasn't too disheartening but ended up putting more energy into a failing effort than I planned. Traffic wasn't too bad through the city to the park, and it wasn't brutally hot at the park as it was on the 4th. It was high noon as I made my return trip which wasn't the best time due to lack of shade. Returned via Lake St as opposed to Grand Central as for some unknown reason the stop light delay times are considerably less on Lake. It was important today as when I stopped at one on Lake, I became quickly overheated and started to get a bit woozy. The dizziness passed as I got rolling again and could generate my own cooling breeze. Had planned on a tailwind back down the slot but it never materialized as it the wind had shifted to the west. Remainder of the ride was an easy pace of spin and coast. What little shade I could find was greatly appreciated. Time of the return leg with a tailwind and downhill was about the same as the time up. Got some miles in at hopefully a calorie burning pace. Used to love riding in the hot weather but not so much nowadays.
