 Wilderness Ride
Original plan was to stop in PA on the way to VA and do some climbing, but it was raining and fifty degrees so kept driving and drove to Radford, VA. Plan was to do a ride after the drive and things looked good with bright sunshine and eighty-degree temperatures. Unfortunately, plan didn't work out. Still suffering from a cold and was tired after the nine-hour drive so figured rest would be better than straining my body and complicating my illness on the first day of the trip. Felt better this morning but still not well. At least the resting heartrate is starting to go down so that is encouraging. Warmed up real nice with bright sunshine. My lizard brain tried to convince me to take another day off and soak in the sun but convinced myself to take a relaxed pace ride as a compromise. Opted for the fifty-five-mile loop of the Wilderness Century. Course cuts out the major mountain climb and a series of killer rollers but still has a good deal of climbing. Course starts out with a seven-mile climb that includes a quarter mile of fourteen percent grade almost at the start. Rode the first few miles at a very relaxed pace with the intent of turning back if I started to suffer. Did in fact suffer a bit with some congestion in the lungs but it wasn't too severe as long as I didn't breathe deeply. After the first hour started to feel better especially with the biggest climb out of the way. A strong south wind kept the speed down on the first long downhill that spoiled a little of the fun. The course listed eighteen climbs but really only had a handful the exceeded two hundred feet of elevation change. There are quite a few short rollers that hit ten percent but most of the longer climbs only average three or four percent. Traffic was light and the course is very scenic running through the foothills, farmlands and river sides. Took it fairly easy most of the day spinning the longer climbs but coming out of the saddle aggressively on the short rollers. Saw a few riders out and about but none going my way. Finished the ride in good shape where the last twelve miles of downhill and tailwind really helped. Felt pretty good until I got off the bike and returned to not feeling well. Legs felt good throughout the ride. Should be back to do the century course again in May.
