 Jack's Mountain
Heading to NC for a metric on Saturday and stopped in Lewisburg, PA for a ride. Plan was to do a mountain climb that I had been attempting to do for a couple of years now but so far weather or schedule hasn't been ideal when passing through the area. Arrived in mid-afternoon and thought I would have time to get the ride in before dark barring any mechanical issues. Hoped to be off the bike by 6 PM which would give me a bit over three hours to get the forty-five mile route in. Things didn't start off to well as I headed west on SR 45 upgrade into a blustery wind. Started off keeping the average up but after a few miles couldn't keep the pace. Got a little relief once off the main highway and into some rolling climbs before the big climb of the day. The climb through Bald Eagle State Park was a little over two miles with an average grade of eight percent. Started off out of the saddle on a ten percent section and settled into the saddle for a long spin. Earlier wind had put me behind schedule but checked the sunset and saw it was 6:42. Had planned on turning back at the top of the climb if I was behind schedule but figured I was good with the extra half hour of sunlight. Climb continued twisting up the mountain at a fairly steady grade. Was looking forward to an exciting downhill burning off a thousand feet of elevation but was a bit disappointed as the backside was almost all straight road. It was fast but not very memorable. Turning east I headed back to the start through rolling farmland that was pleasant riding. Strong tailwind really helped with the enjoyment. Had one challenge left a few miles from the finish with a short five-hundred-foot climb back over the ridge. I had done the climb before and found it most unpleasant. It was less than a mile long but has a fifteen percent grade over the last half of the hill. Struggled up the hill painfully and though I had climbed the mountain okay I was back to dismal climbing on this much shorter section. Thought a couple times about getting off and walking as it would have been at about the same speed I was riding. Then realized that it would probably be slower walking in cleats and pushing the bike, so I kept on struggling. Fortunately, the final few miles were mostly downhill, and I coasted a good portion of it as the legs were tapped out. Was happy that I had maintained a fourteen average but was a bit premature as lost quite a bit of time on a crowded bike path back to the start. Checked off Jack's Mountain from my to do list. Would have been quite a bit easier without twenty miles of headwind on the way out.
