 Two Climbs
Another cool day with light winds but also as a bonus have another day of haze from the Canadian wildfires. Particle count was supposed to be hazardous but with the amount of second hand smoke I inhaled in the Sixties and Seventies, it has probably made me somewhat immune. Decided to do some climbing and work on my FTP. My computer nanny was nice enough to let me know that my FTP is rated poor. So today was going to pour on the coals for the first hour and try to keep the wattage high. Started up New Odessa and tried to keep it above two-hundred again and was somewhat successful. Had to back off a bit going through Odessa but got back on it on the Ridge Road climb. Crested the hill with a thousand feet in the elevation bank at ten point seven which was a really good climb for me. Then had six miles of downhill and it was a bit more difficult to keep the wattage up but did a good job. Got to Horseheads with a one seventy five watt average and went toward Hanover Square in an attempt to avoid stop lights as still had several minutes until my hour was up. Ended up the hour with over a sixteen average after hammering the downhill. Backed off on the effort and worked my way through Horseheads onto the Sing Sing Rd before starting the second climb of the day up Murphy Hill. Tried to keep a good spin up the climb that is a few miles of mostly four or five percent with a couple of ten percent steps and finishing with a wall a grade in the high teens. Rode steady as best I could but lost quite a bit off my earlier effort. Still had two big downhills left and got good speed on the first dropping from Catlin to Chambers. Fun hill to descend with one white knuckle curve. Got to Chambers with an average in the mid-fourteens and tried to push it back up on the downgrade on SR 414N to Watkins. Actually recovered nicely and kept good speed over the five or six miles and then had the fast descent to Watkins. Was able to get the average up to sixteen before the finish. Had one really great climb and one more typical (poor) but achieved my goal of riding all out for an hour. Hopefully I'll be able to get some more improvement in before the eventual plateau.
