Ended up taking a week off due to a combination of scratchy throat and very warm temperatures. Pretty much just sealed my fate for the summer as have to be starting up my fitness program again as fitness numbers are way down and weight is way up. Was a bit apprehensive about the recurring chest pains and so decided to avoid any hills as the although it was cooler today it was still above ninety. Headed up the valley towards Millport and would continue to Eldridge Park if the road gods were kind today. Had some decent strength in the legs and with the west wind through the slot producing the usually eddies, I had a continuously shifting head\tail wind. Felt okay through to the foot of Johnson Hollow with the average comfortably above fifteen which I rated at acceptable though far from good. It would have been pretty good with a south wind for me but not so much with the shifting winds. Speed slowed down but heart rate stayed up for the two miles of step climbs to the highpoint in Pine Valley. Picked up the pace once over the top and into the flatlands. Once past Horseheads though the challenges aren't from terrain and wind but from stoplights and traffic. Travelled up Grand Central that has a nice bike lane though it would be better if it wasn't used for parking. Got to Eldrige and found it pretty much deserted which was a bit surprising on the Fourth of July. Sat on a park bench next to the lake and soon found a good reason for a sparse crowd. Started to feel a bit woozy so figured I should get riding again and saw my bike computer was reading 112 degrees. Felt better to be on the move again and cut over to Lake Street for the return as although it doesn't have a bike lane there are fewer lights and less traffic. Return trip is usually a fast run downhill through the valley, but today it was quite a bit of spin and coast. Legs felt weak so dropped way back on my effort. Heart rate stayed high though probably due more to the heat rather than the pedaling. So got back on the bike with mixed signals. Good ride up weak ride home. Hopefully burned off a few calories but was disappointed to see the park abandoned.
