Headed out towards Spencer to make an attempt up Swartwood and then maybe do some speed work on the twenty-five-mile downgrade. Decided to focus on the two climbs and then hopefully finish off with some fast riding. Old Odessa went as expected and got over it in an average fat guy time. Don't think I'll be improving any unless the weight goes down. Thought I was doing well enough to get a seventeen with a good day on the bike. Did some work on to the Junction and had the average climbing gradually. Wind was out of the south and started wearing me down on the way to the foot of the second climb at seventeen miles in. Couldn't keep the average climbing through the next section of rollers as didn't have quite enough to carry any decent speed over the top of the six humps. Went into the two mile climb up Swartwood a bit winded. First mile is a twisting three to five percent grade along a stream through a deep chasm. I sat and spun and made fairly good time. Second half still twists and turns but with grades between eight and twelve percent. Climbed steady and put out decent watts for me. It is one of the best climbs in the area and is challenging but still pleasant to climb. It is also a thrill to descend but usually mostly climb it in the last few years. Tried to do some speed on the descent to Erin but wind and tired legs were holding me back. Had good speed through Breezeport and to Horseheads but not fast enough to get a seventeen. Was a bit disappointed that I didn't get the hoped-for tailwind as the wind was out of the west back through Pine Valley. Ended up doing enough work to get the average up to sixteen and then just cruised the last five or six miles down the slot. Turned out to be an enjoyable ride despite my lack of speed. Climbing is coming along slowly and occasionally am getting some good speed out of the legs.
