 Swartwood Repeat
Felt a little better today and winds appear to be moderating so decided to repeat last weeks ride up Swartwood Hill. Had to ride up New Odessa Road to get accurate comparison although I really dislike the climb. Stayed in the saddle as don't have much staying power out of it lately. Ended up slightly slower than last weeks attempt with a less than spectacular climb. I did improve on the section to the Junction as had some good speed. It started to shower as I rolled into the stoplight at the Junction but it wasn't a soaker and roads didn't even get wet. It did help with the cooling. Don't think I did as well through the rollers as last week but was able to keep the average rising. Showers stopped as I started up Swartwood. I had gotten there a over a mile an hour faster than last week so was hoping for a good climb. Did okay on the shallow climbing at the bottom half but hit a wall as soon as the grade went to eight percent. Ended up struggling in the granny gear which wasn't encouraging since I swapped my inner chainring from a forty to a thirty-six. Ended up being a much poorer climb compared to last week. I had lost all my earlier gains and went over the top about the same time as last week. Despite the legs being worthless on the climb they recovered nicely and was able to hammer the downhill to Erin. Even kept a good cruising speed on the downgrade through Breezeport to Horseheads despite the slight headwind. Caught the tailwind in Horseheads and put some effort into the final dozen miles down the slot. I was sweating excessively and couldn't keep the sweat from running into my left eye. I would have to occasionally have squeeze it closed to get it clear. Not sure how it affects depth perception but it wasn't any fun. Ended up finishing a mile an hour faster than last week so overall fitness is improving. A fairly satisfying ride after a couple days of poor riding.
