Went out today anticipating another good ride. Northern flat road from my home was closed for construction so had to climb out on the Havana Glen Road side. Decided to head up Havana for the first time this year and was greeted by a road closed sign there too. Opted to climb on and see what lie ahead. Came back to reality quickly on the eighteen percent grade. Could barely keep forward momentum going even in the granny great. I kept struggling upward at a slow and painful pace. Got three quarters of the way up when I rode through the construction. County crews were leveling the shoulders with gravel. Rode between the trucks without issue as the crews were enjoying a well-deserved break. Got over the top with an a five-seven average. I was years past doing over seven on the mountain bike much less than the times I used to do in the glory days. Planned on making up some time on the fairly flat terrain to the Junction with plan to be at the usual goal of being at the top on the hill on SR 13 in under and hour, a pace decent for the winter months. Couldn't generate any speed whatsoever into the headwind up SR 224. Tried to rally but could only get to the junction at a little over eleven. Didn't have much hope for the climb but soldiered on regardless. Had another dismal climb and only missed the hour mark by a few seconds but average speed was only ten-five as the steep climb up Havana had cut a half mile off the standard distance. Having failed my first two goals, I did the math and figured I would still be able to pull a fifteen out overall with a good run down the hill to Horseheads and a strong tailwind down the valley. Headwind through Sullivinville worked against me maintaining any high speed, but it was a least pleasant cycling. Got to Horseheads with a fifteen still possible but that again became unlikely as yesterday had been a hard tailwind all the way down through the slot, today it was a crosswind from the west up to the hump in Pine Valley. Did catch a favorable wind through Millport but although the average was rising fairly well, it was apparent that I would run out of road just shy of the fifteen. Instead of having a heroic rally over the last couple miles and pulling it off at the last minute, I gave in and shut the engine down and pretty much coasted in the last couple of miles. Felt strong yesterday but that feeling wasn't nearby today. Did climb up Havana that is a plus even though it was an abysmal climb. Failed all three goals but got some miles in on a sunny day.
