Sunny with seventy degree temperatures for a few hours before the rain returns and drops back below freezing overnight. Went out to try to do some climbing and access home much damage was done on my body taking a week off the bike. Plan was just to do a few climbs in the area without getting too far from home in case the weather forecasters made any errors in the oncoming rain approach. Started off up Old Odessa for the first time this year. Thought I was doing okay just trying to climb steady without coming out of the saddle on the steep sections. Had a slight tailwind that probably helped a bit but turned out to me a mediocre climb reaching Odessa at nine-five. Continued through Odessa to the second half of the climb up Ridge Road to Seymoreville. This section was straight into the wind and did okay on the first section to Catherine reaching it a little over ten but faded on the last section and just kept it moving. Was seeing spots by the top that indicates at least I was trying. Descended down Middle Road to the top of Birch Hill and continued descending into Millport. Second climb of the day was the mild Johnson Hollow climb. Felt quite a bit better on my second attempt up it this year. Had good leg speed and lack of a headwind and warm sunshine made for some decent cycling. Completed climb and then had a long fast decent down SR 414N to Watkins where I started the third climb up SR14 & SR14A to Reading Center. Legs felt okay on first tailwind section but failed to keep the speed over ten so not really a very good climb. Continued to see the climbing spots so an effort was being made. Was fairly sedate on the final steep section to Reading Center. Returned to Watkins via Irelandville and easily descended in the high forties for a fun downhill back to Watkins. Left it up to fate on whether to do another climb up old Corning or stay on the flats through the swamp to home. Green light at the foot of Old Corning meant flat-Red light meant climb. Light turned yellow just as I entered the intersection so headed up Old Corning. It is also a fairly mild climb for the area starting off with a half mile or so of eight to ten percent and another mile of six percent. Didn't have any snap at all left in legs, but they kept chugging along okay delivering me over the top eventually. Reward was another forty-five plus descent back to Montour. Felt I did okay on a course averaging near one-hundred feet of climb per mile at fourteen miles an hour. Not great but okay after a week of down time. Computer nanny was not as understanding letting me know I've lost a tick of my VO2Max and three ticks off my FTP. Hopefully I'll be able to improve before my next upcoming event in the Carolinas in a week or two. Two or three days of freezing temperatures aren't going to help with outdoor miles, so its back on the trainer hopefully tomorrow.
