Second cool weather ride of the year. Cool and damp with a north wind keeping it a bit uncomfortable. Numbers again marginal at best so it was another short ride though a climbing one to Rock Stream. Rather than doing the usual highway climbs opted for Mud Lake that is steep for a mile then a long grade to Reading Center. Thought with fresh legs and cooler temperatures I might have a good start on the climb, but it didn't go very well. Ended up spinning with little time out of the saddle. Usually have more of a struggle with the grade between Irelandville and Reading Center against the north wind but it went better than expected. Temperature out of the valley dropped into the mid fifties. Thought I might have turned in a good climb by averaging the two sections but rolled into Reading only a little over eleven. Didn't look very favorable for hitting my fifteen base line with that time but had a chance since remainder of the course was downhills and tailwind. Wind kind of suppressed the speed on the downgrade to Rock Stream and numbers still weren't very promising. Three miles to the top of the descent into Watkins was average but dive bombed the hill at a very good pace and rolled into Watkins above fifteen. Held enough speed through town by hitting the lights favorably and had a tailwind through the swamp. Was happy to finish unexpectantly above my low expectation goal. Downhill was a blast and made the short ride worthwhile.
