 Tour de Lebanon Valley
Had a wonderful night of severe stomach distress that left me without much sleep and a totally depleted body battery. Had I not already had a motel for tonight I would have called it a day and headed home. Since I couldn't check into my motel for several hours, I made the very sound decision to just start the metric and see how it went because I could always bail. Ride started in Lebanon, PA and was a show and go. Got registered and suited up and headed out after seeing a few small groups of riders get started. Had a guy join me who I had ridden with on other area rides last year that wanted to accompany me. I was already in survival mode so had little desire to do any speed- not that that was an option. Chatted for a while until he easily pulled away on the first climb. Rode alone for a few miles and ascended Mt Gretna at a comfortable pace. Felt okay and was enjoying the touring speed. Caught up with another rider climbing the second mount of the day and we chatted for a couple miles, but he disappeared on the descent. Stopped at the first rest stop and got some trail mix that stayed down comfortably. Had the first quarter out of the way and it was a nice slow ride. Got passed by a younger rider climbing out of the first rest stop and accelerated to catch him. Passed and dropped him after a mile or two and felt fairly well. Thinks started to go south at the twenty-mile mark where the short steep climbs began to show up. Had to go into the granny on one ten percent plus climb where I was quickly overtaken by the young rider and soon by an older rider I had also passed earlier. They were out of the saddle smashing the pedals while I was sitting and being abused by my granny gear. Lost at least a minute on the old guy on the quarter mile long wall and more on the younger rider that was out of sight by the top and never to be seen again. I was able to catch up and pass the older rider as the climbing continued on shallower grades. Passed by the second rest stop at thirty miles and kept on climbing and descending the choppy climbs. Most of the steep grades were gone by the forty-five mile rest stop and the last fifteen were mostly rolling grades at worst. Thought I would have an easy time of it, but body went into zombie mode. Legs kept turning and progress was made but body felt hollow and had no strength. Kept getting passed by riders that would glide away effortlessly while I was only able to maintain a painful twelve mile an hour pace. Couldn't use a headwind excuse as the wind wasn't a factor at all during the ride. Concentrated on just watching the tenth of miles tic off the computer. Not sure if I would rate it a death ride but it was pretty close. Did successfully complete the course but it was four miles an hour slower than I had done it two years ago. Finished as I had started feeling like a beaten dog with my body depleted. Food provided at the post ride did not look at all appealing so headed out toward my motel to figure out what to do about tomorrow's metric in NJ.
