 Chainring Swap
Having survived two medium length rides in a row without too much damage decided to journey down to Lebanon, PA to ride a metric or perhaps the shorter thirty miler. Had already paid the entry before my setback in March so figured why not. The why not of course was the dueling weather forecasts. Predictions have been wavering between afternoon showers and morning rain. Plan was to drive down to the park in Elysburg and check the late afternoon forecast. If it looked favorable I would stay overnight in PA and ride in the morning. If rain was predicted, I would return home and remain dry. Metric course was reported as the same as last year. This presented a problem as don't think I could get up one short steep section without severe destress. Bike was set up in March for the fairly flat Tidewater area of VA and sported a 54/40. Decided to swap for the medium combination of 52/36. Made the swap and headed out for a short test ride to Millport. Wind was light and out of the north so had an easy spin on the way up. There is a small climb up to Burch Hill Rd at my turn around point. Had to go into the small chainring for the climb and chain popped off while going back on the big ring. Put it back on and repeated with the same result. Worked fine on the work stand but guess not so well under low. Thought I would get the average up to fifteen on the way home with downhill and slight headwind. Wasn't as easy as I thought and ended up struggling with empty legs. Barely got to fifteen riding into town but dropped below on the final upgrade home. Easy test ride wasn't very much fun nor confidence building. Put the bike back on the stand and tuned the derailleur. Another short test ride followed that was successful. Loaded up and headed south. Ended up driving home disappointed as heavy rain was finally predicted.
