Didn't get much recovery overnight and opted for a shorter ride than planned today. Usually when I go through the forest, I pass all the way through to Taylor and return outside the park for a seventy plus mile ride. Today I planned on halving the distance and heading south past Ocean Pond before returning on SR 90. Started out kind of slowly as I added a couple bypasses to keep off 441 for a couple of miles. Started out through a residential area, but road turned to sand and had to navigate through it for a mile. It was mostly hardpacked so really wasn't too bad. Headed through park on Gum Swamp Road for a slow ride through the pine forest into a rather unpleasant wind. After ten miles of cranking turned to the south and at least had a few miles of crosswind. Tried short bypass loop around SR 90 but road turned to loose deep sand after a mile and had to backtrack as front wheel tended to plow rather than steer. Got onto SR 90 for a twelve mile dead straight section back to Lake City. It is a high speed high traffic road frequented by lumber trucks. Normally it is not too bad as there is a good shoulder. Not very pleasant to ride though as there isn't much scenery and not any reason to shift though occasionally, I would upshift and stand for a while to break up the monotony. Used to be I would be doing speed work with the tailwind but now adays I mostly concentrate on just moving forward. Ran into trouble through a construction zone. The road had been milled out and repaved, but the shoulder was over an inch higher and covered with four of five inches of loose material. So ended up riding in traffic with no ability to bail if things got hairy. The speed limit was in the sixties and most of the tractor trailers were using all of it. Turned out to be a high stress situation with the only option would be backtracking the whole route since there are few side roads in the national park and most are loose sand. Had five miles of not fun until catching a break when the last two miles went one lane. Ended up holding up traffic as there wasn't any room to pass me. Was able to keep the speed in the low twenties and seemed to not cause too much ill will as nobody threw anything at me when through the detour and back on the shoulder. Pretty much spent myself on SR 90 and just spun out the last five miles. Did not enjoy the ride today.
