Another warm day being brought in by a strong southern wind blowing steadily at twenty and gusting to fifty. Wanted to get a ride in but had limited options due to the high winds. Opted again for the mountain bike to stay in the woods to lesson its effect. Decided to head south to start thereby catching the wind on the way home. That just left riding the rail trail again and hoping the warm air has melted some of the snow I had to plow through yesterday. Wasn't too hopeful as it was a hard freeze last night and would have turned yesterday's melt into ice. Plan was to ride up the trail again but would turn around if I fell on the ice or tapped out in the snow. All the snow was gone on the single track on the way to the rail trail which wasn't surprising as it runs along the river in the center of the valley. Picked up a bit of mud but was fairly easy going. Had a half mile of pavement into the wind that wasn't very pleasant and eventually hit the trail. The first mile of what was hardpack yesterday was now ice and mud. I could see the tracks from yesterday and saw that the guy on the fat bike had not returned back up the trail. Some melting and refreezing had occurred and only had a mile or so of snow to get through instead of yesterdays four. Most of the rest was either ice or shallow mud as except for a thin layer the ground was still frozen. Even the snow sections were easier as I could follow my trail from yesterday that was now an icy trough. Can't say it was much fun but it was quite a bit easier than yesterday. My bike and legs had acquired a nice coating of mud and the bike also had caked ice particles on the equipment. Wasn't able to ride without tapping out. Survived some squirrely sections of ice but was beaten again by the same ascent out of a small gully as yesterday. Actually got through the gully but wasn't able to keep it going straight and ran off the trail into the snow and dumped the bike. Ride home was fun though as caught a wicked tailwind down hill on the highway. Was fairly easy to keep the bike in the mid twenties for most of the return leg. Much prefer to ride the road bike in the heat than the mountain bike in the cold but miles is miles.
