 Dundee Group Ride
Weather was most excellent today with bright sunshine and mid-seventies temperatures. Wind was even improved over previous few rides as it was out of west in single digits. We had four riders today and headed up the lake and over the ridge to Dundee. Steve requested some mega climbing so I added a couple of hills late in the ride if legs and time permitted. Had to replace a spoke on an E-bike before the ride but we got off fairly on time. We started off drafting the E-bike through the swamp and through Watkins at a brisk low twenties pace. Did okay until we hit the first hill up SR 14 out of Watkins. I noticed that my heart rate was extremely high and determined I was picking up Steve's heart rate. Dropped out of the draft and deleted his heart rate sensor from my computer and added my own. Doug was still in the draft of the E-bike rapidly opening up a significant gap. Steve hung back with me and we soldiered on up the mile and a half climb trying to limit our losses. We regrouped at Gabriel's Junction and did a few miles of fast paceline heading north up SR14. Pace was also quite brisk varying between twenty-two and twenty-seven miles an hour. We got off the highway and headed up the Lakemont Road before turning into a headwind for the second climb of the day over the ridge on the Dundee-Torrey Road. It's not too hard of a climb and is less than a mile long, but I was gapped quickly when the boys got out of the saddle. I came out of the saddle and had rubber legs and had to sit back down and spin again trying to limit my losses. The headwind had no effect on the E-bike and it was quickly out of sight. Steve aided by the draft was able to stay with Doug on the climb. After a quick descent to Dundee we headed uphill on the third climb south out of Dundee on SR 14A. Tried to stay on the E-bike's wheel but failed and was quickly passed by Doug and Steve. Steve ran out of leg on the second step of the climb, and I was eventually able to close catch up to him. Doug and the E-bike were riding easy together on the false flat after the climb at least a quarter mile ahead. I rode hard after the steeper sections were out of the way, and we were able to regroup north of Reading Center. We lost the E-bike as he bailed on the ride as his cassette was coming undone probably due to lack of torque reinstalling it after the spoke replacement. Fourth climb of the day was up the Church Road out of Reading Center again into a headwind. I was dropped on the early section but was able to catch back up before the top of the hill. Steve said he was out of leg and didn't favor doing the last climb of the day, so all we had left was ten miles of fast downhill to get back to the start. We headed down Irelandville Road and worked on our descending skills on a very fast descent. I was surprised how much better the secondary roads were to the north having spent the last few days dodging cracks and potholes on my southern routes. There was still large amounts of sand at the intersections that required taking the corners slow but otherwise it was a fast ride. Pretty much spent most of the ride riding at my limit and though I was fast on the flat sections and downhills my climbing skills are sorely lacking. Extremely fun though taxing ride.
