 Eldridge Park
Had planned on working some more hills but felt logy and decided to just ride some flats. Today was another weight training day so hoping when I finish that up for the year I'll have more energy for cycling. Temperature was fantastic for early March topping seventy degrees. Unfortunately it is being brought in by a stiff southern wind. Headed up the valley on my flat course to Eldridge Park It starts up with a ten mile upgrade to Pine Valley climbing around five hundred feet. It was difficult today with the fifteen mile an hour steady headwind. Started out fairly strong pushing some good watts but petered out after about five miles of effort. After that the effort was sporadic cycling between fifteen and thirteen miles an hour. Once to Pine Valley the route flattens out and the pace was a good bit faster to Horseheads. Pace suffered greatly going through the traffic in the Heights and to Elmira. Quite a few people at the park today though there is still ice on the lake. Took a short cruise through the park and headed for home with a good tailwind. Legs were tired though and ended up doing quite a bit of coasting. The ride was still enjoyable as it felt good soaking up the sun. The winter has been hard on the roads and had to dodge quite a few large potholes and liberated the cold patch that is used in the winter to fix potholes, it quickly ends up thrown out of the potholes by traffic and is swept onto the shoulders where it accumulates. Fortunately it is fairly soft and doesn't usually cause flats when riding through it. I did ride through quite a bit of it today instead of veering out into the traffic lane to avoid it. Did get the speed up into the low twenties over the last few miles but ended up with a low wattage slow cruise. Have one more day of nice weather before winter returns and hope to have a small group ride tomorrow.
