 Headwind to Interlaken
Took a couple days off to recover from Saturday's blustery day. The north wind was still blowing but at it was in the single digits and much warmer today. Headed out into the wind for twenty odd miles to Interlaken via Mecklenburg and T-burg. Started out with another dismal climb up Old Odessa. Thought I had a fairly good spin going but time check at Odessa being less than nine was a strong indication that my current climbing level is sorely lacking. Second part of the climb up SR 228 to Smith Valley was a bit better but still less than ten. Started to feel a bit better once the first climb was behind me and tried to pick up the pace and rally for a thirteen by Mecklenburg. Did fairly well and got it barely above twelve but failure was pretty much expected with the dismal climb and headwind. I kept up a fairly strong pace on the downgrade to Perry City and through the rolling grades to Interlaken. Had the average up to fourteen at the bottom of the second climb up SR 96B to Lodi. Climb was better than the first and was almost mediocre. It was a relief to be out of the headwind. Didn't really lose much on the average going over the hill and looked forward to twenty miles of mostly downhill and a strong wind at my back. I was motoring along at good clip but got distracted by a bug that somehow had gotten beneath my T-shirt, jersey and bib set. Made a couple attempts at squashing it and finally had to stop and try to stop the itching but failed. Other than disrobing alongside the highway, I didn't see any good options. It wasn't really stinging or biting but I think I was allergic to the little bugger. Aided by the wind I had another mediocre climb out of Valois before hammering on the pedals back to Watkins. Lost time going through Watkins of course in tourist season. Overall, not a bad ride. Kind of slow but finished fairly well after suffering on the bike on the early climb.
