 Queen City Century
Had a full century scheduled for today in Staunton, VA. Body battery was only at twenty-three so didn't plan on doing much on the bike best case being a long slow ride. The course runs out to a central rest stop and then has four loops of various lengths to produce a few distance options with doing all four loops adding to one hundred miles. Goal was to at least do laps one and two and then decide whether to do more or just finish with the metric length. Decided if my average was above seventeen at after the second loop, I would go on and if less would opt for the metric course. Had quite a few less riders at the start than in recent years which was a bit disappointing as the weather was great for the event with cool temperatures and little wind. Had no intention of riding with the front group and was hoping to just get with a group I could hang with. Rolled out of town in the middle of the pack which began to shatter on the first long grade out of town as the first ten miles or so was uphill. Just saw one guy off the front and then groups of three or four formed up over the first couple of miles. Felt fairly good on the mild slope and worked my way past several groups until we hit the first steep climb. I was able to hang onto the rear of a reformed large group over the climb, but it wasn't pleasant and I fell off soon after starting the first rolling loop. Rode the rest of the first loop with three other guys that would pass me on the downhills, and I would then catch and pass them on the climbs. Didn't really ride with them but just cycled in the same general area. Started to feel a bit better toward the end of the first loop and did some speed work on a long downhill to the rest stop chasing a few riders up the road. The large group that I had rode with earlier had stopped at the rest stop and were leaving as I skipped the stop. Second loop started with a short steep climb, and I was only a little behind a group of eight or nine riders. I was able to catch up on a downhill and sat in with the group with the intention of trying to stay with them. Made a strong effort over the next series of climbs and was able to stay with the front of the group and was doing well on the out of the saddle sections. Went off with a couple of the front guys on the long downgrade after the climb until we regrouped staring the next series of climbs. The hard climbing had really taxed me though, and I dropped back to take a nature break. The few miles I had done with the group had raised my fifteen mile an hour average over the first loop well into the sixteens. Unfortunately, that brief hard effort had pretty much finished me, and I struggled to finish the second lap. At the fifty-mile mark I was below the seventeen target and wasted to boot, so it was easy to make the decision of going for the metric length. The last thirteen miles was painful and again approaching a death ride status. Lost nearly a mile an hour off the average even with the last few miles being downhill. I wasn't expecting too much from the ride and overall it wasn't very much fun. I was at least pleased with the few miles I was able to climb well and that at least gave me some hope for the future. Checked my body battery rating after the ride, and saw I was totally depleted again after the first hour. Plan on staying in VA for a couple of days for some relaxed riding and hoping to get the body recovering better.
