 Another Grinding Day
Another day of avoiding any hills, and the only way to do that is to head south up the valley. Goal of the day was to just try to enjoy the ride and attempt to get over a fifteen average. Ride started out well enough as there wasn't much headwind up the valley and was able to spin along steadily. the course had three different section with the first being the steady incline up the valley to Horseheads. From there the second section crosses over to SR 13N for an additional six miles of upgrade and two miles of a more aggressive grade. Third leg includes two long highway descents and a section of rollers. Got through the first section into the wind with a fourteen average that I was satisfied with. Figured that with the aid of a tailwind I could maintain the fourteen average over the six miles of slightly steeper grade and lose a little on the two mile section. I would then be able to increase the average easily on the four miles of fast descent. Big plan that went bust a couple miles into the section as the legs got heavy and the watts dropped. Soon I was only able to keep the speed around twelve and then had to occasionally back off that to take the strain off my legs. Got to the final two miles of the climb and really suffered. Pretty much abandoned all my plans and just focused on finishing. Recover a bit on the first long downhill although it did involve a good deal of coasting. Went into touring mode over the last couple of miles of rollers that wasn't that great as the factory dairy farm was spreading manure on the fields. The odor of manure has the tendency to burn my lungs a bit. Finished it off by descending into Odessa and a two mile fast descent to home. Doing fairly well over the first hour of riding now but still having difficulties with the steeper climbs and it now appears distance.
