Fifty-mile event on Saturday in Henderson Harbor got postponed due to potentially hazardous weather conditions. Hadn't planned on riding anyways, although I had already entered, as it was a long drive to ride in the rain. Took some time off the bike to give my health time to improve. Medication side effects weren't helping to provide any incentive to ride either. It was warm and sunny today with dry roads and single digit wind so decided to try a ride so that my fitness level wouldn't keep decreasing. Headed out up the valley into the wind and would decide on a course and distance once I saw how my body responded. Started out fairly well with the goal of trying to make Millprt at fifteen. Only got four miles in before having a front tire puncture and having sealant fountain all over the bike and me. Stopped for a while to let it seal and decided to not push my luck and head for home. Tried patching the tire but ended up putting a new one on. Headed back out again with the same intentions but wasn't keeping as fast a pace as my first effort. Tried picking the pace up and was glad to see my heart rate rise quickly as lately it has been hesitant to do so. Didn't get back to fifteen by Millport but was feeling good so opted to try Burch Hill. It's a fairly nice climb with only a short section of eleven percent. Kept the pressure on the pedals and had a mediocre climb although I wasn't able to get out of the saddle and had to avail myself of the granny gear. Kept the watts and the heartrate up into the wind down the Middle Road to Horseheads. Would occasionally get the speed up into the mid-twenties but couldn't hold it for long. Got to Horseheads under an hour easily, but it was far from a good time. Did the math and thought that a seventeen average was a reasonable expectation as long as I kept trying. Lucked out and caught a true tailwind all the way back down the slot. Once I got over the hump in Pine Valley was able to keep the pace in the mid to upper twenties. Sailed along nicely and felt good to be riding hard and fast again. I was able to best seventeen fairly easily with enough extra to get through town and home without losing it. It was the best I had ridden since Florida. Fast on the flats and downhills but still sorely lacking on the climbing. Good ride despite the flat.
