to Hilton w/Bike-N-Gin
The clouds opened up on the way home. I headlined it a "deluge" but it was not exactly that. It was an hour+ long rainfall.
We started back for home with a few sprinkles that seemed light enough initially. Made it part way back -then too much rain.
Before the rain we had a nice surprise crossing paths with Patricia Irizarry. We saw Pat and her sister, while we surveyed the ongoing modifications to the bus depot parking lot. Summer School starts Monday!
Shortly after we surveyed the bus compound it started to sprinkle. We made a pit stop quickly at the Community Center and then started for home. The rain came with ever more persistence. We decided to stop the ride and wait it out. Waiting out the rain, stopping a couple of times under trees, trying not to get too wet -ultimately we got soaked.
Finally hunkering down to wait it out near where Salmon Creek crosses under Hill Road. There we met two Hill Road residents, former cyclists. The Hill Road neighbors each separately offered to help.The neighbors were both older folk. Dave a stone cutter, is 72. The gal from across the street (I neglected to ask her name) was in her Eighties. What fantastic open and friendly people they are! During the downpour, me and Ginny were standing under a large Sugar Maple in Dave's front yard. In the pouring rain, these kind folk went out of their way to offer assistance to us.
Does it often seem that strangers are willing to be more friendly to strangers, than they might be with the people living next door?
While it was pouring rain, Dave Benoit came to us with a friendly smile and a huge umbrella. Dave also offered to drive us home. Shortly afterward, the gal from across the street walked over to offer us a ride, too.
After nearly an hour of steady rain, Ginny took the ride offered from Dave. I asked her to give Dave some home-brew as a "thank you". While I waited for Ginny to get back with the truck the rain stopped. I shook off the water from the umbrella and closed it. Then, squeezed out the water from my bike seat and started doing intervals up and down a short segment of Hill Road. I added about 1.5 miles onto the odometer awaiting Ginny's return.
Before Ginny returned, the clouds opened again and the rain returned. Dave and Ginny returned a few moments later. I waved to Dave, noticed he had two unmarked bottles of my home-brew. Ginny pulled up along side where I stood. I loaded the bikes into the truck, -off we headed home.
