North wind blowing again but not near the level of yesterday and so it really was hardly noticeable. Signed up for a time trial at the state senior games in July and decided that I really need to start building up some speed. Group riding would be ideal but hardly have enough riders anymore to get together for fast rides. Time trialing is my next best option, as I really don't care much for interval training. Parts for my conversion of an older road bike to a time trial bike haven't arrived yet, so just used my regular machine for some practice. Decided to try to put out a steady effort on the Johnson Hollow course which has three seven-mile legs. First leg is up SR 14 to Millport that has a steady one to two percent grade. SR 14 is the normal time trial course, but it is an out and back. Second leg starts up with a short steep climb up Johnson Hollow that continues uphill for five miles before starting to descend again for another two. Third leg starts with a half mile long six percent highway climb and finishes with a fast decent into Watkins and a short flat section back through the swamp on SR 14. Started the ride out of the saddle to build up some speed and did fairly well for the first couple of miles trying to not to let the speed drop below twenty. Computer nanny chimed in with my performance indicator for the day with a rather poor negative twelve. Decided to back off a little since I was coming off two hard days of climbing and am traveling to a hilly half century on Saturday. Kept trying to keep the flow going but using less of the big muscles. Finished the first leg with an eighteen average. The climb starting the second leg wasn't very good but was able to get the speed back up after the steep section. Had some good surges in this section but only had a sixteen nine at the top. Thought with a strong effort on the last leg I could get the average up to eighteen and was successful in that. Overall, not at bad effort as it is probably my first or second solo effort over an eighteen average. Need to get up to over twenty to be happy, so lots of work ahead.
