 LA Peepers
Original plan was to drive to Texas for some work, but the job was delayed due to predicted cold temperatures in Texas. I had made it as far as Arkansas before I was called off. Thought about doing some climbing in Hot Springs, but it was only around fifty with a good bit of fog and some light rain. Plan C had me heading for Louisiana where there was a report of sunshine and seventy degree weather. Arrived in Homer with plans to loop around Claiborne Lake. It was near sixty with cloud cover and no rain, so I braved the wet roads and headed out. Had to get used to the road bike again after three months off it. Wobbled a little for a few peddle strokes before the muscle memory took over and I was riding again. Course is a fairly mild eleven mile grade followed by a short steep descent and a mile long climb with a couple sections of eleven percent. Last section is a rolling descent back to Homer. Felt good to be back on the bike and spun well on the initial grade. Got a bit frisky after the descent and decided I would show the climb who was boss. Made it about halfway up the steep section before the grade dominated me. I didn’t crack but had to sit and struggle over the second half of the climb. Turned back toward town after the crest as the sun finally broke through the clouds. Temperature climbed quickly under the hot sun that felt very good on my old body. Spun back into town and was serenaded by peepers as I pedaled along. Really didn’t have a very good average speed and the climbing was sub par as usual, but it turned into a decent first ride. Got quite a bit of Louisiana clay on the bike but I stayed dry throughout the ride.
