 Cold Start
Health has improved a little from last year's disappointment, so decided to get out and start the year off again with an outside ride. Kept putting the ride off as the day went on hoping the temperature would climb above freezing. Didn't look like that was happening so hunted up my winter gear, and after soaping my booty zippers I actually got everything on and headed out. Rode into town on the mountain bike, and it didn't seem too bad as there was almost no traffic and hardly anyone around at all. North wind was blowing fairly hard so didn't think I would spend much time on the bike today. Hit a short section of single track by Queen Catherine's grave and it seemed rather pleasant out of the wind. Thought I might get some extra miles in by riding the trail to Watkins, but once I was back in the wind, I became cold and decided to head back into the woods. I haven't ridden the Bird Trail in over a year but thought even if it has overgrown a little bushwacking was better than the North wind. Found out that the Bird Trail has now been renamed the Willow Walk and Mike's bridge has been repaired and renamed after some guy that repaired it, I guess. Trail was in excellent condition and didn't have to dismount at all. Came out on the Airport Road that now has been renamed the Bird Trail. Guess that is okay as it is only an overgrown dirt road now and nothing remains of the old airport. It used to be just a grass landing strip with a couple of small planes, but it was purchased by the state and reclaimed by the swamp. I remember going there with my mother back in the sixties to see the fighter jet that made an emergency landing, overshot, and sank into the swamp. Also saw the Goodyear Blimp land there at least once around the same time. Thought about making another lap but caught a tailwind through town and returned home. Didn't plan on doing any more outside riding for a while since I am hitting the indoor trainer pretty hard, but once I got inside thought about riding again outside tomorrow.
