 Greek Peak Road Race
Went to Virgil for the thirty ninth running of the road race. Back in the day we once did the four lap version of the course but today we all opted for the one lap twenty two mile master's group. Weather was pretty nice this year which is unusual as the weather for this race is traditionally horrendous. Probably around a hundred riders for the various groups doing one, two or three laps. There were around twenty five in our group. First couple of miles of downgrade were fairly easy with only one single rider making an ineffective attack. We hit the first hill and there wasn't really any attack just a steady pace that had me dropped about halfway up the long climb. Iron Doug stayed with the front group, Mighty Young Joe fell back with a group of five and the rest of us losers were strung out. Pushed hard to crest the hill with another rider and drafted for a bit. Tried to work with the guy to catch up with Joe's group, but after I took a hard pull the other guy dropped me on a slight rise. I don't think it was intentional he was just a stronger rider and rode away. So it was time trial time for the next six or seven miles. I caught and passed one rider that had dropped off of Joe's group and went belly up. I looked back on one of the turns and saw a rider I used to ride and race with many years ago wasn't too far behind and backed off a little until he caught up to me. We worked together until we got to the second climb of the day known as the wall. Neither one of us would ever be confused with climbers, and we struggled over the top together. We worked well together on the downhill and saw another rider from Joe's group a quarter mile up the road. I made a major effort to catch the guy before the final finishing climb and was successful. It was a short lived accomplishment as he easily dropped me on the last climb and I lost forty seconds over that half mile climb. The post race cookies were delicious. Didn't have a good day today, but it was actually fun and I didn't suffer like I did at Scranton last week. I felt fairly well and just wasn't fast enough.
