 Two More Climbs
Sunny and warm again. Took a long ride today with two significant climbs. Spun up the first six mile climb by the Glen track. Was bothered a bit by the steep section at the bottom but rode steady for the remainder. Had fifteen miles of cross/headwind on the downgrade to Coopers Plains and didn't do much work. Had to navigate through Painted Post and Corning before beginning the second climb up Whiskey Creek. Traffic lights in Corning aren't usually too bad but after adding in the lights of Painted Post the riding really bogged down. Wasn't really in the mood for climbing up Whiskey Creek anymore, but found it to be preferable to more headwind through Big Flats. Took it easy up the climb and pretty much coasted downhill several miles to Elmira. Passage through Elmira-Horseheads had another two dozen traffic lights and probably hit half of them red. Finally made it out and into the clear and then encountered a traffic stoppage at Pine Valley. It appears that a compromised Jeep driver swerved into the path of a tractor trailer and was bounced backwards into another tractor trailer that was following him. One of tractor trailers then left the highway and entered a nearby house. SR 14 ended up being closed for several hours. I took a quick detour onto the bike trail that parallels the highway and wasn't terribly delayed. Really wanted to do some miles and a couple of favored climbs but really spent too much time waiting at lights to enjoy the day. Will have to find a new route that will almost certainly involve more climbing and a much greater distance to keep the good portions of the route. Will probably have to add Harris Hill and make it a three climb ride.
